Competing exchange interactions in magnetic multilayers.

We have studied alloying of the nonmagnetic spacer layer with a magnetic material as a method of tuning the interlayer coupling in magnetic multilayers. We have specifically studied the Fe/V(100) system by alloying the spacer V with various amounts of Fe. For some Fe concentrations in the spacer, it is possible to create a competition between antiferromagnetic Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida exchange and direct ferromagnetic exchange coupling. The exchange coupling and transport properties for a large span of systems with different spacer concentrations and thicknesses were calculated and measured experimentally and good agreement between observations and theory was observed. A reduction in magnetoresistance of about 50% was observed close to the switchover from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic coupling.

[Systemic thrombosis in central retinal artery occlusion--case report].

Central retinal artery occlusion is a dramatic event, a major emergency; presentation is with an acute, painless and profound loss of vision. The patient usually comes too late to the ophthalmologist, the treatment becoming inefficient. Therefore we present a case of CRA occlusion managed by systemic thrombolysis.

[Experimentation of apiarian preparations for the direct and the indirect capping of the dental pulp].

With a view to extend the range of biologically active preparations for the direct and the indirect capping of the dental pulp the authors have used a paste made from an alcoholic solution of propolis and zincoxyde. The study was carried on in 150 teeth with indirect capping of deep cavities, and 50 teeth with direct capping. The evolution of the cappings was followed clinically, radiologically and morphologically. The results obtained showed that the paste with propolis exerts effects similar to those of zinc eugenate. The morphologic study of the indirect capping showed that secondary dentin developed shortly after the application of the paste, and that it was followed by the development of pulpolites and the sclerous transformation of the pulp. In teeth with direct capping a protective film developed at the opening of the dental chamber. With time the pulpal wound undergoes cicatrization by a process of fibrosis and there is a trend to remineralization. No areas of pulpal degenerescence were found the rest of the pulpal tissue, and this suggests that the paste is more histophilic than the pastes based on calcium hydroxide, with which an area of necrosis occurred at the opening of the chamber, and calcium and fibrous degenerescence occurred in the coronal pulp.

Study on possible deleterious effects induced in white mice and rabbits by prolonged administration of polidin in different concentrations.

There were investigated possible deleterious effects induced in white mice and rabbits by prolonged administration of polidin in different concentrations, as well as of polidin associated with membrane fraction of Klebsiella pneumoniae. In the experimental model used all the animals evolved normally presenting some transient blood modifications which occurred after administration of comparatively much higher doses than those usually administered in man. There were not noticed significant macroscopical and microscopical modifications at the level of the organs sampled from mice. The pregnant female mice treated along one month with doses, proportionally 1000 times higher than those used in human therapy, presented some pathological aspects, which disappeared on cessation of therapy with the biological. These animals were not affected by abortions and the experiment proved the absence of some teratogenic effects connected to polidin administration. The prolonged polidin administration also acted as an immunostimulant of the natural and acquired defense system.

[HIV infection in a seronegative child diagnosed by isolation of the virus. The significant immunological and epidemiological signs].

HIV-1, subtype F was isolated from a seronegative child aged 2.5 yr. ELISA tests (Behring HIV-1 + 2, Abbott HIV-1 + 2, Wellcozyme HIV-1 Recombinant, Clonatec HIV-1 + 2, Genelavia Mixt), and also rapid tests (Abbott Pack, Serodia) were all negative, although some of them presented borderline reactivities. Western Blot (Cambridge Biotech) revealed an undetermined profile (traces of anti-gp160 plus anti-p24). A new WB test (Sanofi Dg. Pasteur) performed at a higher serum concentration (1/25) revealed a complete antibody profile, despite the very low intensity of bands. A new serum sample prelevated 6 month later was completely negative on all tests used. Both samples, were negatives in WB for HIV2 and HTLVs. A heparinised blood sample was used for the co-cultivation of PBMC and was proven to be positive in the 14th day of culture. The isolated DNA from end-culture cells was subjected to PCR amplifications for Heteroduplex Mobility Assay direct subtyping (primers ES7 and ES8) and for the investigation of genotypic sensitivity to AZT (primers A/NE1). Lymphocyte populations phenotyping revealed leukocytosis (> 15,000/mL) with a predominance of the CD8+ subset CD4/CD8 ratio was < 1. Plasmatic HIV-1 load (measured by bDNA--Chiron) did not reached detectable levels of HIV-1 RNA. p24 Ag assay (EIA-Coulter) revealed a detectable p24 antigenemia only in the first serum sample and only after acid dissociation. So, this patient may present an integrated HIV-1 infection until now "silent".
