Experimental anosmia induced by 1% ZnSO4 solution triggered some structural and functional changes in olfactory epithelium of strain C57BL/6 mice. It was stimulated by various odors: isoamyl acetate, butyl acetate and some substances present in mice urine. It was registered that the rate of physiological responses recovery differed for various odors, being the higher in case of isoamyl acetate and butyl acetate treatment and slower with odors of the biological origin. The study of spatial distribution of the responses evoked by the odors of various quality has demonstrated that the areas of the most rapid recovery corresponded to the same areas of the epithelium of intact mice where higher responses for these stimuli were registered.
Laboratory males and females of two strains (C57BL/6 and AKR) have been studied for age variations in the electric responses of the olfactory epithelium to an odorous stimulation as well as for some morphometric indices. The EOG amplitude is found to be different for three age groups. The maximum amplitude was registered in the animals of groups I and II. In old animals the EOG amplitude decreased. Age distinctions of morphometric characteristics of the olfactory epithelium of mice were found. The relationship between the morphometric age variations in the olfactory epithelium and the character of the physiologic responses to an odorous stimulation are discussed.
In order to investigate the sensitivity to isovaleric acid (IVA) and isoamylacetate the electroolfactograms (EOGs) were recorded from various parts of the olfactory epithelium in two strains (AKR and C57BL/6) of mice. Odorant-specific regional differences in the responsiveness were observed. This heterogeneity is apparently determined genetically. The regions of maximum responses to two odorants are spatially separated, though their partial overlapping can be observed. When the concentration of the stimuli was changed the maximum responses were recorded from the same regions. The differences in the IVA-response distribution in the males of C57BL/6 strain are probably a result of their specific anosmia to this substance.

The olfactory mucosa of laboratory male mice of lines C57BL/6 and AKR was stimulated by vapours of isovaleric acid and isoamylacetate of various concentrations. Study of electro-olfactography has demonstrated that mice of line C57BL/6 were insensitive to isovaleric acid of concentrations from 10(-5) to 10(-3) mol/l and remained normally sensitive to isoamylacetate. The mice of line AKR were sensitive to isovaleric acid of the same concentrations. The authors suggest using mice of these line as a model for investigations of the olfactory reception mechanisms.
Changes in the amplitude of electroolfactogramm (EOG) after unilateral section of the olfactory nerve has been investigated in Rana temporaria. The EOG decreased during the first postoperative fortnight, but there was not a single case of complete disappearance of EOG at all recording sites on the epithelial surface. The EOG amplitude began increasing gradually towards the end of the third week and was about 80-100% of the control value in the middle of the tenth week. The amplitude of the EOG recorded in the contralateral olfactory organ decreased too, but its decrease was less pronounced and the complete recovery of the EOG amplitude occurred earlier. The character of changes and maximum decrease of the EOG amplitude after axotomy varied in different parts of the olfactory organ. In the caudo-lateral region of the organ the EOG amplitude decreased earlier and its recovery here began later than in the centro-medial one.

There was studied the endocrine control of the first stage of olfactory reception. In the experiments with male castration it was detected that the olfactory receptor cells had a slow tonic influence on sex steroid hormones. The most dependent on the hormone control were the olfactory cells sensitive to natural stimuli. From the morphological data it was supposed that this influence was realized through the control of process of neurogenesis of the olfactory cells. On another experimental modelestral females. Which had quick changes of sex hormone level, it was detected that the reason for the olfactory sensitivity to odor variations during estrus cycle did not localized in the peripheral part of the olfactory system. Apparently the quick endocrine influence was realized at the central part of the olfactory system.
Structural and functional changes in olfactory epithelium of laboratory mice were studied following the treatment of nasal cavity with zinc sulphate. Different concentrations of zinc sulphate caused olfactory epithelium cells destruction, moreover the degree of this destruction depended on concentration. Direct dependence between morphological regeneration and the EOG amplitude increase was observed after the treatment with 1% zinc sulphate. The epithelium regeneration after the treatment with higher concentration (3 and 5%) was slower and the EOG amplitude fell behind the increase of the olfactory epithelium thickness. The application of different olfactory stimuli allowed to establish that the rate of reactions re-establishment differed with the odorous.
