[Surface reactivity of enosseous implanted bio-glass ceramics at varying lengths of implantation].

Chemical and structural surface changes at enosseous bioglass-ceramic-implants (Ap 40) were investigated by means of electron microprobe after an implantation period of 4 to 52 weeks. An intimate bonding between regenerated bone and bioglass-ceramic surface was evident at points already after 4 weeks. Initial degradation processes at implant surface came to a standstill after 12th week. A calcium and phosphorus rich layer of great importance for implant stability and biocompatibility was formed immediately contacting the bone. This surface layer had a thickness of nearly 25 micrometers -- 30 micrometers at 12 weeks and remains unchanged up to 52 weeks. The registered calcium and phosphorus impulse rate (cps) is equal to that of neighbouring bone. Chemical similarity of implant surface makes bioglass-ceramic Ap 40 a suitable biomaterial for durable bone replacement.

[Injuries to the facial portion of the skull and their late effects in children and juveniles - a 10-year analysis (author's transl)].

A 10-year analysis comprising a total of 534 patients was used to study the histories of 192 puerile and juvenile patients with maxillofacial injuries. The proportion of children up to ten and fifteen years of age was 11.4 percent and 16.1 percent, respectively. Clinical and roentgenological reexaminations could be made of 139 patients. Typical fracture localizations and the frequency of late effects observed in the facial skeleton and dental system are discussed. It was possible for late damage to former tooth germs in the cleft of fracture to be observed in every second patient. Disturbances of growth after fractures of the body of mandible and the mid-facial skeleton were not noted. Among 33 patients with temporomandibular fractures, there were observed 5 cases showing different degrees of disturbed growth. The therapeutic approach chosen according to age and localization of fracture is described in detail.

[Studies on primary hyperparathyroidism with particular reference to osteal manifestations in the maxillofacial region (author's transl)].

After a brief review of the pathophysiological relationships determined for primary hyperparathyroidism, osteal manifestations of this condition are discussed. The importance of a histological demonstration of pathognomonic dissecting fibro-osteoclasia in iliac crest biopsy and in the marginal region of so-called brown tumors is pointed out in connection with results obtained by diagnosis in general and differential diagnosis in particular. The occurrence in the maxillofacial region of Recklinghausen's generalized fibrous osteodystrophy is described with reference to a particular case history, and the diagnostic value of clinical and roentgenological, laboratory-diagnosis and histological criteria is determined.

[Graduate teaching aspects to be considered in the planning of undergraduate dental courses].

The general part of the present paper deals with questions concerning the demanding conceptual design of teaching from the aspect of creative studying. The students' qualification for responsible scientific work and creative studying is considered to be an essential question of the conceptual design of the demanding process of learning and acquiring the scientific bases. Thus, it will be possible to improve effectively the attitude towards studying and the engagement in creative achievements (in a narrow sense or in explicit forms of organization). In the empirical part of the present paper, the results from the interviewing of 240 dental students on relevant conceptual factors of teaching are discussed. An analysis of situation led to valuable insights and conclusions as to more effective teaching in the framework of stomatological study.

[Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy].

BACKGROUND: The melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy is a rare and so far as being classified neoplasm with a high rate of recurrence for one year after diagnosis. Since Krompecher described 1918 the tumor at first, only about 200 cases are reported until today, mostly with manifestation in the maxillary region. CASE-REPORTS: The authors present two infants at the age of six and eight weeks with first clinical manifestation of the tumor in the maxillary region. Although there were no other common signs, the tumor destroyed wide areas of the mid-face. In spite of a treatment with radical surgery, recurrences occur rapidly in the first living year. CONCLUSIONS: Our clinical and histological findings show characteristics of local malignant growth. For these facts the radical resections of the primary tumor and its recurrences are individually the therapeutical consequences. A follow up of seven years of one infant shows a hypoplasm of the mid-face as a result of the inhibition of further growth by the loss of germs after maxillary hemisection.
