EPR investigation of the gamma-ray irradiated natural and tanned collagen.

Free radicals produced in natural and tanned collagen by gamma-ray irradiation within 1-15 kGy absorbed dose ranges were investigated by EPR spectroscopy. Tanned collagen was prepared using formaldehyde as well as aluminum basic salts [Al(OH)SO4] tanning processes. Both natural and formaldehyde-tanned irradiated collagen show the same kind of EPR spectrum consisting of a single broad, slightly asymmetric line. Irradiated collagen tanned by aluminum basic salts process displayed a complex EPR spectrum consisting of a superposition of broad and narrow lines. A computer simulation of this spectrum allowed to evidence the presence of seven different kinds of paramagnetic centers, including those observed in the irradiated natural collagen. Corresponding Spin Hamiltonian parameters (g-factor, hyperfine splitting constant) as well as relative concentrations of these centers were calculated. Experimentally determined relative concentrations display a positive correlation with the absorbed dose described by a linear-type dependence. After three weeks of storage at room temperature, the concentration of some centers diminished by about 50%. The possible nature of these centers is discussed in connection with the local structure of the tanned collagen.

Temporomandibular joint ankylosis. A possible complication in juvenile psoriatic rheumatism.

The authors present a rare case of bilateral temporomandibular joint ankylosis secondary to polyarticular juvenile psoriatic arthritis in a 24 year-old man. The patient first presented with arthritis of his right elbow joint at the age of 9, followed by involvement of the distal inter-phalangeal joints of his right foot and both sacroiliac joints. Serum rheumatoid factor was not detected. At the age of 16 he developed psoriatic lesions affecting his nails and skin. By the age of 20, clinical and radiological evidence of arthritis was detected in his temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Subsequently, the patient developed bilateral TMJ ankylosis over a period of 4 years. The patient was managed by bilateral resection of the ankylosis bone blocks, mobilization of the mandible and interposition of Dacron material between the two neo-articular surfaces. 10 months postoperatively the patient maintained an inter-incisal distance of 3 cm. Postoperative mechano-therapy was hindered by the limited use of the patients' hands.

Penetration and proliferation of BHK and HeLa cells into a three-dimensional collagen matrix of bone stroma type. Preliminary results.

Some preliminary data regarding the test of penetration and proliferation of BHK and HeLa cells biocompatibility to a three dimensional stroma saturated with phosphorous and calcium salts (a biomaterial replacing bone) are presented. These data suggest that the analysed biomaterial might be used in surgical practices of prosthesis appliance on interfaces of fractured bone.
