[Chemical sensitivity of visual cortex neurons at different stages of development of feeding behavior].

Chemical sensitivity of cortical neurones to acetylcholine and noradrenaline was studied in cats at different stages of automatized instrumental food-procuring reaction. A technique was used, consisting in microionophoretic application of biologically active substances to neurones of the visual cortex in free behaving animals. It was found that separate stages of integral behaviour involve different chemical sensitivity of cortical neurones to acetylcholine and noradrenaline which determine the dynamics of spike activity.

Acetylcholine↗

[The characteristics of the chemical sensitivity of the cerebral cortical neurons in the stages of food-procuring behavior in cats depending on the quality of the reinforcement].

Chemical sensitivity of the neurons of the cat's visual cortex was studied at successive stages of food-procuring behaviour formed as an instrumental act with a reinforcement either by milk or meat powder. Basic neurotransmitters were microiontophoretically applied to single neurons. It was shown that under the influence of acetylcholine and noradrenaline the number of universal neurons at successive stages of behavioural acts decreased while the number of the neurons are active at all the stages increased in the situation with milk reinforcement and decreased under the conditions of meat reinforcement.

Acetylcholine↗

[The neurochemical mechanisms of the participation of individual neurons in the processes of foresight and assessing the results of behavioral activity].

Chemical sensitivity of neurons of the cat's visual cortex was studied at successive stages of food-procuring behaviour, formed as an instrumental act with a reinforcement or under the conditions of unexpected appearance of milk. Biologically active substances were microionophoretically applied to single neurons of the visual cortex. During the period of anticipation and perception of milk under these two conditions neurons of the visual cortex had different chemical sensitivity to acetylcholine and noradrenaline. The dynamics of spike activity in these processes depended on protein synthesis reactions in neurons.

[The effect of noradrenaline, acetylcholine and their blockers on cortical neuronal activity in goal-directed behavior].

Neurochemical cellular mechanisms of central organization of the consecutive stages of formation of a goal-directed behavioural act were studied in cats by means of microiontophoretic application of biologically active substances. Chemical characteristics of single cortical neurons varied at different stages of behavioural act. Dynamics of spike activity at these stages changed in opposite directions during application of neurotransmitters and their antagonists. The differences were more expressed during propranolol and atropine than during noradrenaline and acetylcholine application.

Acetylcholine↗

[The neurochemical cellular mechanisms for assessing the results of behavioral activity].

Chemical sensitivity of cortical neurons to acetylcholine, noradrenaline, cycloheximide, lys-vasopressin, atropine, and propranolol was studied in cats at different stages of automatized instrumental food-procuring reactions and the same reactions without a reinforcement. A technique was used consisting in micro-ionophoretic application of substances to neurons of the visual cortex in freely behaving animals. Some neurons were found to have a different chemical sensitivity to biologically active substances in the two behavioural experimental situations and significance of protein synthesis mechanisms for these processes.

[Dynamics of the impulse activity of somatosensory cortical neurons during conditioned instrumental reactions].

Spike activity of 41 units in the first somatosensory cortical area was studied on unrestrained cats during the performance of a fixed conditioned alimentary instrumental reaction. Light or sound was used as a conditioned stimulus. The whole behavioral act was divided into six stages. It has been shown that different units of the somatosensory cortex change their spike activity either at all or only at some stages of the conditioned instrumental behavioral act. At no stage of the food-procuring behaviour does spike activity of the studied neurones essentially depend on the sensory modality of the conditioned signal. Units with an identified peripheral receptive field change their spike activity more pronouncedly than those with non-identified receptive fields.

[The electrical characteristics of the command and motor neurons during the acquisition of a conditioned defensive reflex and the development of long-term sensitization in snails].

The mechanisms of conditioning of the defensive pneumostome closure reflex and long-term sensitization were studied at the level of electrical characteristics of the command and motor neurons. A significant decrease in membrane and threshold potentials in the command neurons was observed after the acquisition of the defensive reflex and long-term sensitization. These potentials decreased to a greater extent in the snails subjected to conditioning after the sensitization. Changes in the critical depolarization level for the action potential generation and its amplitude were insignificant. Thus, the observed phenomena testify to an increase in membrane excitability of the command neurons. Similar changes were not found in the motor neurons.

[Impulse activity of visual cortex neurons at successive stages of instrumental behavior].

Dynamics of spike activity of 62 units was studied in the projection visual area of the cerebral cortex in unrestrained cats during their performance of a conditioned alimentary instrumental reaction. Analysis of the activity of each unit was made at intervals from the beginning of the conditioned signal (light or sound) to the beginning of lapping milk which appeared in the feeding trough after the cat pressed the pedal. It has been found that the form of activity of the cortical unit greatly depends on the modality of the conditioned stimulus (light or sound). As to the final stages of instrumental behaviour and the achievment of the positive result, the degree of participation of cortical visual units in their formation does not depend on the modality of the conditioned signal.
