Topochemistry of the initial stages of the dissolution of single crystals of acetaminophen.

Topochemistry of the initial stages of dissolution of monoclinic single crystals of acetaminophen was studied. Etching pits were identified with the sites of emerging dislocations. Etching of different faces with a solution of ethyl acetate in carbon tetrachloride gave different shapes of etching pits. An interpretation of this result was suggested, based on the analysis of the anisotropy of the crystal structure. Etching of the same crystal face with different etching agents was shown to result in different shapes of etching pits.

[Ultrasonic diagnosis of liver diseases].

The authors analyse the possibilities of ultrasonic diagnosis of the diffuse liver diseases. Sixty normal subjects and 114 patients (50 with chronic hepatitis, 30 with hepatosis, 34 liver cirrhosis) were examined. The authors suggest a new method consisting in the measurement of the "compensation power", i. e. of the energy that is consumed during penetration via hepatic tissues with more energy being consumed the denser the tissue. A significant difference in that parameter was recorded between hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and hepatosis, permitting the differentiation between the illnesses under consideration. Study of the other parameters (the length, width, liver log, the diameter of the vena cava inferior, of the splenic vein and spleen) enables expanding the number of indicators used in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of the liver diseases.

[The organization of the rehabilitation of infectious disease patients in multiple hospital overcrowding].

The Bagram Rehabilitation Centre was deployed to meet the requirements in equal postinfectious management of patients. Its organic structure was as following: command, 8 companies, aid post and supply units. Each company had in its structure 6 combined-arms officers and warrant officers. Rehabilitation measures included protection regimen with a two-hour after-dinner rest, 5 meals a day, therapeutic physical training, vitamin therapy, psychotherapy and occupational therapy. Convalescents were discharged from the Centre after a complete rehabilitation of their performance and combat capabilities.

[The local manifestations of diphtheria].

The development of diphtheria is characterized by a pronounced local process, but the description of local changes in the disease are based only on postmortem findings. 67 patients with different forms of diphtheria were examined. In 11 cases of descending croup bronchoscopic examination was carried out. As revealed in this study, at the primary stage of the disease films cover the whole of the air duct system, and the process is identical to that on tonsils. In the course of convalescence and under the action of specific antiserum films on the tonsils, the soft palate and the vocal cords disappeared, and films in the larynx, the trachea and bronchi could be easily separated from the mucous membrane, but always with the formation of erosions and even perforations in it. The character of the process was indicative of the absence of any specific action of diphtheria toxin on the mucous membrane at the site of the inoculation of the infective agent. No correlation between the severity of the course of diphtheria, the degree of edema and the frequency of the development of complications was noted.
