Contribution to the Analysis of the 3A2 <-- &Xtilde;1A1 "Wulf" Transition of Ozone by High-Resolution Fourier Transform Spectrometry.

The analysis of the rotational structure of the high-resolution Fourier transform 0(0)0 absorption spectrum of the 3A2 <-- &Xtilde;1A1 band system of the "Wulf" transition of the isotopomer 16O3 of ozone is reported for the first time. With a near pure case (b) coupling model for the upper triplet state, we have assigned a significant portion of the spectrum, mainly the F1 (J = N + 1) and F2 (J = N) spin components, primarily in the lower frequency region of the band. The lines corresponding to the F3 (J = N - 1) component are weak at lower frequencies and heavily congested in the central and higher frequency regions of the spectrum. Perturbations and predissociation phenomena have reduced the effective lifetime of the metastable 3A2 state and have also limited the number of transitions included in the least-squares fit of the band. Approximately 100 lines have been assigned in the range from 9100-9550 cm-1. Three rotational, three centrifugal distortion, three spin-rotation, and one spin-spin constant were varied. The geometry of the molecule in the 3A2 state, as determined from these constants, is r = 1.345 Å and theta = 98.9 degrees, in good agreement with ab initio results. Copyright 1998 Academic Press.

[Morphological classification of acute myeloid leukemias using the FAB system. Retrospective analysis of 106 cases].

Blood and bone marrow samples from 106 patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia were reviewed independently by three observers according to the FAB proposals. Without a cytochemical stain, complete agreement occurred in 75% of cases. The major discrepancies were between M1 and M5 poorly differentiated (4 cases) and M2 and M4 (12 cases). These discrepancies disappeared with cytochemistry. Others non-concurrences were between M1 and M2 (4 cases) M2 and M6 (3 cases), M4 and M5 differentiated (2 cases), M2 and RAEB (1 case). To solve these latter discrepancies some points of the FAB classification require clarification.

[Familial Mediterranean fever and fatty liver. effect of a long time colchicine treatment on triglyceride storage (author's transl)].

A 35-year-old man, sephardic jew, complains for the last eleven years of typical and frequent attacks of FMF. His liver is hypertrophic. Needle-biopsy reveals an extensive macrovacuolar triglyceride storage (60 per cent) and an active vascular congestion with erythrodiapedesis in the mild and centrolobular zone, without any necrosis, cellular infiltration nor fibrosis. Electron microscopy shows lipofuschin deposits and mild lesions of mitochondrias, endoplasmic reticulum. Blood triglycerides and apo B are rather low. After six weeks of colchicine treatment, needle biopsy shows no more active congestion nor erythrodiapedesis. Triglyceride storage lowers to 40 per cent. After seven months of colchicine treatment, triglyceride storage falls down to 12 per cent. FMF may be considered as a cause of fatty liver when there is not any cause else and only after deep decrease or disparition of triglyceride deposit by a long time colchicine treatment.

[Total atrophy of the villi during primary agammaglobulinemia in adults. Therapeutic problems (author's transl)].

A 21-year-old man presented with a 10-year history of a malabsorption syndrome of moderate severity, splenomegaly, and recurrent respiratory infections. Investigations revealed total atrophy of the villi and primary agammaglobulinemia. A gluten-free diet was ineffective. In spite of the absence of lambliasis, treatment with metronidazole produced objective clinical improvement and biological signs of healing of the malabsorption syndrome, but no alteration in the agammaglobulinemia. The authors discuss the relationship between total villous atrophy and primary agammaglobulinemias and the mode of action of metronidazole.

[Kaposi's sarcoma and malignant lymphoma. Discussion of this association (author's transl)].

Kaposi's sarcoma was diagnosed in a 62 year old female at the last stage of an indefined malignant lymphoma. Clinically and histopathologically, some cutaneous aspects were consistent with mycosis fungoides. However, the histological examination of lymph-nodes led to the diagnosis of Hodgkin's disease, sometimes associated with features of Kaposi's sarcoma. During the past few years, the occurrence of Kaposi's sarcoma in the course of cancers, malignant lymphomas and especially during Hodgkin's disease, has been reported. It has been suggested that immunosuppressive therapy undertaken for the initial tumor could account for a viral carcinogenesis. In this respect, the vascular proliferation observed in Kaposi's sarcoma could be compared with the lymphocyte induced angiogenesis, which occurs during the experimental graft versus host reaction. Therefore, Kaposi's sarcoma could be the result of a tumoral rejection. In the case of our observation, it does not seem possible to diagnose an angio-immunoblastic lymphadenopathy; but it is of interest to note that, in this later disease, histological features of vascular neogenesis have also been reported.

[Streptozotocin and malignant insulinomas. Apropos of the case. Review of the literature].

In spite of possible toxicity streptozotocin now appears to be the best treatment for malignant islet cell tumour with liver metastases, i.e. inoperable tumours with a poor prognosis either due to extension of the tumour itself or due to hypoglycemic attacks. Out of about 60 patients thus treated, 1 to 2 years survival were obtained. 22 out of 52 patients reported by Broder and Carter are still alive and one may estimate the overall percentage of favourable results at 65%. On the other hand out of another 100 patients treated elsewhere with this antineoplastic agent, only a few cases of carcinoid tumour gave encouraging results. The course of the others was not modified significantly.
