A dermatoglyphic study of the Gurungs, Mangars and Kirantis of Nepal.

Finger and palm prints were collected from 306 Nepalese males belonging to the Kiranti, Gurung and Mangar tribes of Nepal. The dermatoglyphic characteristics show affinities with other Asiatic Mongoloid populations especially those residing in the southern Himalayas.

Genetic polymorphisms in the Kuwaiti Arabs.

Blood samples were collected from 162 Kuwaiti Arabs. These samples were typed for the ABO, MNSs, Rh, Kell and Duffy blood group systems, serum protein haptoglobins, the red cell isoenzymes acid phosphatase, phosphoglucomutase (locus 1), adenylate kinase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, and the lactate and malate dehydrogenase variants. Comparisons were made with serological findings for other Arab populations in the Arabian peninsula.

4-Chloromethylphenoxyacetyl polystyrene and polyamide supports for solid-phase peptide synthesis.

Two functionalised supports for the solid-phase synthesis of peptides under mild reaction conditions were prepared: 4-chloromethylphenoxyacetamidomethyl-copoly (styrene-1%-divinylbenzene) and 4-chloromethylphenoxyacetyl-norleucyl-poly (dimethylacrylamide). They were devised in order to avoid the danger of racemization which exists during base-catalyzed esterification of the first protected amino acid to the 4-alkoxybenzyl alcohol resins formerly employed in combination with N alpha-9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl and tert.-butyl side-chain protecting groups. Esterification of N alpha-protected amino acids to the new resins can be achieved easily and without significant levels of racemization by means of their caesium salts, while cleavage from the supports is possible by treatment with trifluoroacetic acid. The 4-chloromethylphenoxyacetyl polystyrene resin was tested by the synthesis of Leu-enkephalin which was cleaved, at the end of the synthesis, from the solid support in 91% yield by 60% trifluoroacetic acid in methylene chloride, and was shown to be more than 99% pure by ion-exchange chromatography and reverse phase high pressure liquid chromatography.

The X linked recessive form of XY gonadal dysgenesis with a high incidence of gonadal germ cell tumours: clinical and genetic studies.

Five phenotypic females in one family had the genotype 46,XY and all had gonadal germ cell tumours. Studies of the family pedigree suggest that this form of XY gonadal dysgenesis is inherited in an X linked recessive manner. G banding of elongated metaphase chromosomes from two subjects with XY gonadal dysgenesis and a female carrier showed no aberrations of the X chromosome. The titres of H-Y antigen in three girls with XY gonadal dysgenesis were in the male control range. Thus it appears that, in the X linked form, XY gonadal dysgenesis may be caused by a point deletion or mutation of a gene on the X chromosome, which controls the gonad specific receptor for the H-Y antigen. Studies of Xg blood groups were uninformative about linkage of Xg with the X borne gene causing the XY gonadal dysgenesis. Dermatoglyphic studies in the girls with XY gonadal dysgenesis and female carriers revealed high a-b palmar ridge counts and a tendency for the A mainline to terminate in the thenar area. Both of these features have been described in patients with Turner's syndrome.

Lung cancer associated with chloromethyl methyl ether manufacture: an investigation at two factories in the United Kingdom.

The prevalence of deaths from lung cancer, other cancer, and all other causes was studied in workers and former workers at two factories (A and B) in the United Kingdom at which chloromethyl methyl ether has been manufactured, at one since about 1948 and at the other since 1956. At factory A in South Wales 571 men were traced and at factory B in the north east of England 1196. A statistically significant excess of observed deaths from lung cancer but not other cancer compared with the number expected was found in factory A when the death rates for the population of Glamorgan were applied. The deaths from lung cancer at factory A were related to risk in terms of total exposure time, and average exposure rate and dosage. The degree of exposure was more important than the duration of exposure. There has so far been no demonstrable excess of deaths from lung cancer in employees working at factory A since the process was changed in 1972. In factory B the risk was low over the whole period, and there was no excess of lung or other cancers compared with the rates for the Tyneside conurbation. Despite improvements in the process in both factories continued surveillance of the workers is needed for some years yet.

Blood groups, haptoglobins and red cell isoenzymes of the Jat Sikhs of Ludhiana District, Panjab, India.

Blood samples from 156 Jat Sikhs were examined for the ABO, MNS, Rhesus, Duffy and Kell blood groups. Serum and lysate samples were prepared and electrophoretically tested for haptoglobin, esterase D, adenylate kinase, phosphoglucomutase and the acid phosphatase systems. Comparisons were made with other populations of the Indian sub-continent and of contiguous regions.

Synthesis of a 21-residue fragment of human proinsulin by the polyamide solid phase method.

The synthesis of human proinsulin fragment residues 40-60 by a solid phase method based on polydimethylacrylamide is described. Nineteen of the amino-acids were introduced as N alpha-(9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl) derivatives; functional side chains were protected as t-butyl ethers and esters. The yield of highly purified 21-residue peptide was 56.5%.
