The authors present their experience on reconstruction by extraoral bone-anchored implants technique, showing two patients from a total of 13, treated for orbital reconstruction. They were selected from 66 patients treated for reconstruction of orbit, ear and nose using this technique by the staff of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the University of Tor Vergata, Rome, Italy. They underwent orbital emptying due to cancer pathology. Surgical technique is described in detail; its final purpose being positioning of titanium fixtures on the orbital borders, necessary to anchor the silicone epithesis. The advantages and potential limits of this technique are exposed, exposing the important role of patient's compliance. The importance of preliminary study on the patients is also emphasized and includes clinical evaluation and instrumental examination for surgical planning, completed by a photographic study in the three standard projections.Satisfactory aesthetic results were obtained by the use of this technique and the authors believe it may represent a valid option; complementary to more traditional ones, but is a first choice in patients who cannot endure major surgery or in case of failure of traditional techniques.

OBJECTIVE: Total body potassium (TBK) concentration is linearly correlated with the size of the body cell mass (BCM). The aim of this study was to compare BCM in normal-weight and obese individuals. METHODS: 271 individuals (207 males, 64 females), 20 to 67 years of age, participated in this study. Subjects were separated by body mass index (BMI): BMI < 25 kg/m(2) (BMI-L) and BMI > 25 kg/m(2) (BMI-H). (40)K was assessed using a whole-body counter and BCM was calculated. RESULTS: BCM and TBK were significantly greater in men, with a trend to be greater in women in BMI-H compared to men in BMI-L. TBK/body weight was significantly lower, while TBK/height was significantly greater for men and women in BMI-H compared to men and women in BMI-L. Fat-free mass (FFM) was significantly greater for men in BMI-H, with no significant differences in FFM between the two groups of women. CONCLUSIONS: The healthy obese subjects in the present study had a greater BCM than the non-obese subjects. These results indicate that it is important to assess BCM in obese individuals because it could influence the type of weight loss regimen that will be used in order to preserve BCM.
Liposuction is a safe procedure for removal of subcutaneous fat in patients with upper leg lipodystrophy. We present a young woman with lipodystrophy of upper leg who underwent ultrasound-assisted three-dimensional suction lipectomy. The aim of the study was to determine the amount of fat to be removed before liposuction and to evaluate soft tissue composition before and after liposuction. At the initial meeting and four months later, body composition parameters were examined by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), which produced a precise assessment of regional fat distribution. The baseline DXA measurements revealed excess of fat tissue for the lateral regions of the right and left legs, and for the area from the waist to hip. After liposuction of established amount of tissue, the same measurements revealed a decrease of fat tissue in all three regions, whereas no significant differences were observed for lean mass. We concluded that the suction lipectomy produced decrease in the fat mass of legs without musculature damage. The DXA technique can be useful in predicting fat removal before suction lipectomy and in estimating changes in soft tissue composition after surgical treatment.
