Crystallography on curved surfaces.

We study static and dynamical properties that distinguish 2D crystals constrained to lie on a curved substrate from their flat-space counterparts. A generic mechanism of dislocation unbinding in the presence of varying Gaussian curvature is presented in the context of a model surface amenable to full analytical treatment. We find that glide diffusion of isolated dislocations is suppressed by a binding potential of purely geometrical origin. Finally, the energetics and biased diffusion dynamics of point defects such as vacancies and interstitials are explained in terms of their geometric potential.

Anomalous coupling between topological defects and curvature.

We investigate a counterintuitive geometric interaction between defects and curvature in thin layers of superfluids, superconductors, and liquid crystals deposited on curved surfaces. Each defect feels a geometric potential whose functional form is determined only by the shape of the surface, but whose sign and strength depend on the transformation properties of the order parameter. For superfluids and superconductors, the strength of this interaction is proportional to the square of the charge and causes all defects to be repelled (attracted) by regions of positive (negative) Gaussian curvature. For liquid crystals in the one elastic constant approximation, charges between 0 and 4pi are attracted by regions of positive curvature while all other charges are repelled.

Defect generation and deconfinement on corrugated topographies.

We investigate topography-driven generation of defects in liquid crystal films coating frozen surfaces of spatially varying Gaussian curvature whose topology does not automatically require defects in the ground state. We study in particular disclination-unbinding transitions with increasing aspect ratio for a surface shaped as a Gaussian bump with a hexatic phase draped over it. The instability of a smooth ground state texture to the generation of a single defect is also discussed. Free boundary conditions for a single bump are considered as well as periodic arrays of bumps. Finally, we argue that defects on a bump encircled by an aligning wall undergo sharp deconfinement transitions as the aspect ratio of the surface is lowered.
