Supramolecular 'flat' Mn9 grid complexes--towards functional molecular platforms.

Flat, quantum dot like arrays of closely spaced, electron rich metal centres are seen as attractive subunits for device capability at the molecular level. Mn(II)9 grids, formed by self-assembly processes using 'tritopic' pyridine-2,6-dihydrazone ligands, provide easy and pre-programmable routes to such systems, and have been shown to exhibit a number of potentially useful physical properties, which could be utilized to generate bi-stable molecular based states. Their ability to form surface monolayers, which can be mapped by STM techniques, bodes well for their possible integration into nanometer scale electronic components of the future. This report highlights some new Mn(II)9 grids, with functionalized ligand sites, that may provide suitable anchor points to surfaces and also be potential donor sites capable of further grid elaboration. Structures, magnetic properties, electrochemical properties, surface studies on HOPG (highly ordered pyrolytic graphite), including the imaging of individual metal ion sites in the grid using CITS (current imaging tunneling spectroscopy) are discussed, in addition to an analysis of the photophysics of a stable mixed oxidation state [Mn(III)4Mn(II)5] grid. The grid physical properties as a whole are assessed in the light of reasonable approaches to the use of such molecules as nanometer scale devices.

Thermal- and photoinduced spin-state switching in an unprecedented three-dimensional bimetallic coordination polymer.

The compound {Fe(pmd)[Ag(CN)2][Ag2(CN)3]} (pmd=pyrimidine) was synthesized and characterized. Magnetic, calorimetric and single crystal visible spectroscopic studies demonstrate the occurrence of a two-step high-spin (HS) right arrow over left arrow low-spin (LS) transition. The critical temperatures are T(c1)=185 and T(c2)=148 K. Each step involves approximately 50 % of the iron centers, with the low-temperature step showing a hysteresis of 2.5 K. The enthalpy and entropy variations associated with the two steps are DeltaH(1)=3.6+/-0.4 kJ mol(-1) and DeltaS(1)=19.5+/-3 J K(-1) mol(-1); DeltaH(2)=4.8+/-0.4 kJ mol(-1) and DeltaS(2)=33.5+/-3 J K(-1) mol(-1). Photomagnetic and visible spectroscopy experiments show that below 50 K, where the LS state is the thermodynamically stable state, the compound can be switched quantitatively to the HS state using green-red light (550-650 nm). HS-to-LS relaxation experiments in the dark at temperatures between 15 and 55 K show that the relaxation takes place via a two-step cooperative process, which was analyzed in the context of the mean field theory. The crystal structure has been studied at 290, 220, 170, 90 and 30 K together with 30 K after irradiation. The compound adopts monoclinic symmetry (P2(1)/c, Z=16) at all temperatures. There are five [FeN6] pseudo-octahedral sites linked by pmd, [Ag(CN)2]- and [Ag2(CN)3]- bridging ligands to form an unprecedented three-dimensional (6,6) topology. The structural analysis allows for an understanding of the microscopic mechanism of the two-step behavior of the thermally induced spin transition as well as the corresponding relaxation of the photoexcited compound based on the individual changes of the five sites. Synergy between metallophilic interactions and the spin transition is also shown by the variation of the AgAg distances. Correlations between the variation of the unit-cell volume and the change of AgAg interactions within each step with the asymmetric change of the anomalous heat capacity have also been inferred.

Self-assembled polynuclear clusters derived from some flexible polydentate dihydrazide ligands.

Polynuclear manganese(II), cobalt(II)/(III), iron(II)/(III) and nickel(II) complexes of a group of flexible polydentate dihydrazone ligands, based on pyridine-2,6-dipicolinic (A), oxalic (B) and malonic (C) subunits are described. Structural details are reported for the linear dinuclear complexes [Ni2(2poap)2(H2O)2](NO3)4 . 2CH3OH . 2.5H2O (1), [Mn2(pttp)(NO3)2(CH3OH)2(H2O)2](NO3)2 . H2O (2) and [Mn2(mapttp)2(NO3)2(H2O)2](NO3)2 . 10H2O (3), a square tetranuclear complex [Co4(pttp)4]Br6 . 9H2O (4), a tetranuclear tetrahedral complex [Ni4(pttp)6](BF4)6F2 . 14H2O (7), and a mixed spin state tetranuclear Ni(II) complex [(2pyoap)2Ni4(CH3OH)4] . 1.5CH3OH (10), with a diamond-like arrangement of metal ions. The paramagnetic metal centers are well separated in each case, leading to weak antiferromagnetic coupling or non-existent spin exchange.

Octanuclear and nonanuclear supramolecular copper(II) complexes with linear "tritopic" ligands: structural and magnetic studies.

The structures and magnetic properties of self-assembled copper(II) clusters and grids with the "tritopic" ligands 2poap (a), Cl2poap (b), m2poap (c), Cl2pomp (d), and 2pomp (e) are described [ligands derived by reaction of 4-R-2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic hydrazide (R = H, Cl, MeO) with 2-pyridinemethylimidate (a-c, respectively) or 2-acetylpyridine (d, R = Cl; e, R = H)]. Cl2poap and Cl2pomp self-assemble with Cu(NO(3))(2) to form octanuclear "pinwheel" cluster complexes [Cu(8)(Cl2poap-2H)(4)(NO(3))(8)].20H(2)O (1) and [Cu(8)(Cl2pomp-2H)(4)(NO(3))(8)].15H(2)O (2), built on a square [2 x 2] grid with four pendant copper arms, using "mild" reaction conditions. Similar reactions of Cl2pomp and 2pomp with Cu(ClO(4))(2) produce pinwheel clusters [Cu(8)(Cl2pomp-2H)(4)(H(2)O)(8)](ClO(4))(8).7H(2)O (3) and [Cu(8)(2pomp-2H)(4)(H(2)O)(8)](ClO(4))(8) (4), respectively. Heating a solution of 1 in MeOH/H(2)O produces a [3 x 3] nonanuclear square grid complex, [Cu(9)(Cl2poap-H)(3)(Cl2poap-2H)(3)](NO(3))(9).18H(2)O (5), which is also produced by direct reaction of the ligand and metal salt under similar conditions. Reaction of m2poap with Cu(NO(3))(2) produces only the [3 x 3] grid [Cu(9)(m2poap-H)(2)(m2poap-2H)(4)](NO(3))(8).17H(2)O (6) under similar conditions. Mixing the tritopic ligand 2poap with pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (picd) in the presence of Cu(NO(3))(2) produces a remarkable mixed ligand, nonanuclear grid complex [Cu(9)(2poap-H)(4)(picd-H)(3)(picd-2H)](NO(3))(9).9H(2)O (7), in which aromatic pi-stacking interactions are important in stabilizing the structure. Complexes 1-3 and 5-7 involve single oxygen atom (alkoxide) bridging connections between adjacent copper centers, while complex 4 has an unprecedented mixed micro-(N-N) and micro-O metal ion connectivity. Compound 1 (C(76)H(92)N(44)Cu(8)O(50)Cl(4)) crystallizes in the tetragonal system, space group I, with a = 21.645(1) A, c = 12.950(1) A, and Z = 2. Compound 2 (C(84)H(88)N(36)O(44)Cl(4)Cu(8)) crystallizes in the tetragonal system, space group I, with a = 21.2562(8) A, c = 12.7583(9) A, and Z = 2. Compound 4 (C(84)H(120)N(28)O(66)Cl(8)Cu(8)) crystallizes in the tetragonal system, space group I4(1)/a, with a = 20.7790(4) A, c = 32.561(1) A, and Z = 4. Compound 7(C(104)H(104)N(46)O(56)Cu(9)) crystallizes in the triclinic system, space group P, with a = 15.473(1) A, b = 19.869(2) A, c = 23.083(2) A, alpha = 88.890(2) degrees, beta = 81.511(2) degrees, gamma = 68.607(1) degrees, and Z = 2. All complexes exhibit dominant intramolecular ferromagnetic exchange coupling, resulting from an orthogonal bridging arrangement within each polynuclear structure.

On the nature of the plateau in two-step dinuclear spin-crossover complexes.

A remarkable feature of the spin-crossover process in several dinuclear iron(II) compounds is a plateau in the two-step transition curve. Up to now, it has not been possible to analyse the spin state of dinuclear pairs that constitute such a plateau, due to the relative high temperatures at which the transition takes place in complexes investigated so far. We solved this problem by experimentally studying a novel dinuclear spin-crossover compound [[Fe(phdia)(NCS)(2)](2)(phdia)] (phdia: 4,7-phenanthroline-5,6-diamine). We report here on the synthesis and characterisation of this system, which exhibits a two-step spin transition at T(c1)=108 K and T(c2)=80 K, displaying 2 K and 7 K wide thermal hysteresis loops in the upper and the lower steps, respectively. A plateau of approximately 20 K width centred at about 90 K, which corresponds to the 50 % of the spin conversion, separates the two transitions. The composition of the plateau was identified in metastable state after quenching to 4.2 K by means of Mössbauer spectroscopy in an external magnetic field. Such experiments revealed that the plateau consists mainly of [HS-LS] pairs (HS=high spin, LS=low spin) and confirmed the hypothesis that the spin conversion in dinuclear entities proceeds through [LS-LS]<-->[HS-LS]<-->[HS-HS] pairs. The results are discussed in terms of a thermodynamic model based on the regular solution theory adapted for dinuclear spin-crossover compounds.

Synergy between spin crossover and metallophilicity in triple interpenetrated 3D nets with the NbO structure type.

Self-assembly of [Ag(CN)2]-, 3-cyanopyridine, and iron(II) gives triple interpenetration of three-dimensional spin crossover (SCO) networks with the NbO topology, which interact each other via argentophilic interactions. Superposition of the networks along the c-axis defines an infinite mosaic of trigonal and hexagonal cross-sectional tubes where water molecules are installed. The structural changes associated with the SCO tune the homoatomic interactions and induce an uncommon change of the lattice volume.

Spin crossover behavior in the iron(II)-2-pyridyl[1,2,3]triazolo[1,5-a]pyridine system: X-ray structure, calorimetric, magnetic, and photomagnetic studies.

Compounds [Fe(tzpy)(3)](BF(4))(2) (1), [Fe(tzpy)(2)(NCS)(2)].S (S = 2CHCl(3) (2), H(2)O (3)), and [Fe(tzpy)(2)(NCSe)(2)] (4) (tzpy is 3-(2-pyridyl)[1,2,3]triazolo[1,5-a]pyridine) have been synthesized and characterized. 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic noncentrosymmetric system, Cc space group, Z = 4, with a = 11.4680(6) A, b = 27.449(2) A, c = 12.4510(8) A, beta = 108.860(5) degrees, V = 3709.0(4) A(3), and T = 293(2) K. The structure consists of mononuclear [Fe(tzpy)(3)](2+) diamagnetic species, which stack via pi-interactions. Disordered BF(4)(-) anions fill the voids generated by complex cations. 2 crystallizes in the triclinic system, P one macro space group, Z = 1, with a = 8.3340(4) A, b = 8.6520(4) A, c = 11.6890(6) A, alpha = 89.113(2) degrees, beta = 81.612(2) degrees, gamma = 77.803(2) degrees, V = 814.90(7) A(3), and T = 293(2) K. The structure consists of mononuclear [Fe(tzpy)(2)(NCS)(2)] neutral species, which interact each other via pi-staking defining layers separated by two-dimensional arrays of CHCl(3). The average Fe-N bond distance, 2.176(3) A, corresponds to what is expected for an iron(II) ion in the high-spin state. Compounds 2-4 undergo thermal-driven spin conversion. The regular solution model was applied to account for the corresponding to thermodynamic parameters. The intermolecular interaction parameter, the characteristic temperature, and the enthalpy and entropy changes associated with the spin conversion were estimated as Gamma = 0.86 (2), 0.89 (3), and 3.79 (4) kJ mol(-1), T(1/2) = 75 (2), 118 (3), and 251 K (4), Delta H = 3.67 (2) and 4.08 (3) kJ mol(-1), and Delta S = 34 (2) and 34.5 (3) J K(-1) mol(-1). Delta H = 8.75 kJ mol(-1) and Delta S = 34.8 J K(-1) mol(-1) were estimated from calorimetric measurements and used as fixed parameters for 4. A quantitative light-induced excited spin state trapping (LIESST) effect was observed for 3, and the high-spin to low-spin relaxation was studied in the temperature region 20-63 K.

Thermal-, pressure-, and light-induced spin transition in novel cyanide-bridged FeII-AgI bimetallic compounds with three-dimensional interpenetrating double structures (FeIILx[Ag(CN)2]2).G.

Low-spin, high-spin and spin-transition behaviours have been observed for the doubly interpenetrating three-dimensional bimetallic compounds (FeII(pz)[Ag(CN)2]2).pz (pz = pyrazine), (FeII(4,4'-bipy)2[Ag(CN)2]2) (4,4'-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine), and (FeII(bpe)2[Ag(CN)2]2) (bpe = bispyridylethylene), respectively. The single crystals of the bpe derivative undergo a spin transition with a large hysteresis loop at about 95 K. After several warming and cooling cycles, the single crystals become a microcrystalline powder with 50% spin transition. Influence of pressure--as well as light-induced excited spin-state trapping (LIESST) on the thermal 50% spin transition of the microcrystalline sample has also been investigated. Thermal spin-transition behaviour has also been induced at pressures higher than 1 bar for the 4,4'-bipy derivative. Both the 4,4'-bipy and bpe derivatives show strong pressure dependence of the spin state at 300 K.
