Frosted branch angiitis associated with rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis.

Simultaneous occurrence of frosted branch angiitis and immune-mediated rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis is reported. The two diseases possibly share a common immune mechanism. Patients of frosted branch angiitis should undergo complete systemic evaluation including renal function tests even if the patient is systemically asymptomatic.

Anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy at high altitude.

High altitude retinopathy with various manifestations is common after exposure to high altitude. Inadequate autoregulatory response of the retinal vascular system is thought to be responsible for this. We report a case of anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy following exposure to high altitude.

Retinal microaneurysmal closure following focal laser photocoagulation in diabetic macular edema.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the temporal relationship of microaneurysmal dosure following focal laser photocoagulation in diabetic macular edema. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This prospective study included 25 eyes of 23 diabetic patients with clinically significant macular edema. Ten to 20 well-defined microaneurysms were preselected and marked on an enlarged photograph of the prelaser fundus fluorescein angiogram. These preselected microaneurysms were focally lasered and followed up angiographically at 48 hours, 1 week, 3 weeks, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks after photocoagulation. Thereafter, the average time span between photocoagulation and the closure of the microaneurysms was determined. RESULTS: The mean number of preselected microaneurysms at baseline was 18.24 +/- 3.51, which remained the same at 48 hours. However, the mean microaneurysmal count decreased to 11.76 +/- 2.65 (35% reduction) at 1 week, 9.12 +/- 2.53 (50% reduction), 7.12 +/- 2.26 (61% reduction), and 4.56 +/- 1.32 (75% reduction) at 3, 6, and 12 weeks, respectively. The majority of the microaneurysms (35%) closed between 48 hours and 1 week. CONCLUSIONS: The microaneurysmal closure following focal laser photocoagulation is a delayed process. None of the preselected microaneurysms showed closure within 48 hours, and 75% of the preselected microaneurysms closed at the end of 12 weeks.

Optical coherence tomography findings in solar retinopathy.

Solar retinopathy is characterized by involvement of the outer retinal layers. Optical coherence tomography may help delineate the retinal injury site in vivo. Optical coherence tomography was performed in three eyes of two patients with solar retinopathy. All three eyes demonstrated a characteristic excavation in the outer hyperreflective layer corresponding to the retinal complex.

Optical coherence tomography in group 2A idiopathic juxtafoveolar telangiectasis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To describe the optical coherence tomographic features in patients with group 2A idiopathic juxtafoveolar telangiectasis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty eyes of 20 consecutive patients with idiopathic juxtafoveolar telangiectasis seen between August 2002 and January 2004 were included in the study. All of the patients underwent color fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, and optical coherence tomography. The main outcome measure was optical coherence tomography findings. RESULTS: The most consistent finding between stages 2 through 5 of group 2A idiopathic juxtafoveolar telangiectasis seen in 35 (87.5%) eyes on optical coherence tomography was the presence of hyporeflective intraretinal spaces in the absence of retinal thickening. Other findings included the presence of hyperreflectivity in the middle or inner retinal layers, suggesting retinal pigment epithelium proliferation and migration corresponding to the stellate foci of pigmentation in stage 4 and features of choroidal or subretinal neovascular membrane in stage 5. CONCLUSION: The optical coherence tomography findings in group 2A idiopathic juxtafoveolar telangiectasis were characteristic and may be helpful in making the diagnosis and defining, as far as possible, the anatomical staging.
