2,3-Diaryl-3-hydroxypropionic acid intermediates in the synthesis of threo forms of 1,2-diaryl-1,3-propanediols.

Racemic threo-3-hydroxy-2,3-diphenylpropionic acid, C15H14O3, (I), crystallizes from ethyl acetate as a conglomerate of separate (+)- and (-)-crystals. The geometries of (I) and its methyl ester are compared. Reduction of (I) gives threo-1,2-diphenyl-1,3-propanediol. The synthesis of threo forms of 1,2-diaryl-1,3-propanediols via 2,3-diaryl-3-hydroxypropionic acids is discussed.

Chalcone epoxide intermediates in the syntheses of lignin-related phenylcoumarans.

Compounds (2R*,3S*)-1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-3-{3-methoxy-2-[(2R*)-tetrahydropyran-2-yloxy]phenyl}-2,3-epoxy-1-propanone, C23H26O7, (I), and trans-1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-3-[3-methoxy-2-(methoxymethoxy)phenyl]-2,3-epoxy-1-propanone, C20H22O7, (II), were obtained on epoxidation of chalcones. The stereochemistries of (I) and (II) were elucidated. In both compounds, the substituents on the oxirane ring are trans-oriented. Compound (I) was obtained together with a diastereometric form that differs from (I) with respect to the configuration of the asymmetric C atom in the tetrahydropyran group. The geometries of the substituted oxirane rings of (I) and (II) are very similar. The hydrogen-bonding patterns, mediated via weak C-H...O interactions, differ considerably. The crystal structures of (I) and (II) are compared with those of related chalcone epoxides. The conversion of (I) and (II) into lignin-related phenylcoumarans is discussed.

On hydrogen bonding in 1,6-anhydro-beta-D-glucopyranose (levoglucosan): X-ray and neutron diffraction and DFT study.

The geometry of hydrogen bonds in 1,6-anhydro-beta-D-glucopyranose (levoglucosan) is accurately determined by refinement of time-of-flight neutron single-crystal diffraction data. Molecules of levoglucosan are held together by a hydrogen-bond array formed by a combination of strong O-H...O and supporting weaker C-H...O bonds. These are fully and accurately detailed by the neutron diffraction study. The strong hydrogen bonds link molecules in finite chains, with hydroxyl O atoms acting as both donors and acceptors of hydroxyl H atoms. A comparison of molecular and solid-state DFT calculations predicts red shifts of O-H and associated blue shifts of C-H stretching frequencies due to the formation of hydrogen bonds in this system.

Asymmetric allylic substitution catalyzed by C1-symmetrical complexes of molybdenum: structural requirements of the ligand and the stereochemical course of the reaction.

Application of new chiral ligands (R)-(-)-12 a and (S)-(+)-12 c (VALDY), derived from amino acids, to the title reaction, involving cinnamyl (linear) and isocinnamyl (branched) type substrates (4 and 5 --> 6), led to excellent regio- and enantioselectivities (>30:1, < or =98 % ee), showing that ligands with a single chiral center are capable of high asymmetric induction. The structural requirements of the ligand and the mechanism are discussed. The application of single enantiomers of deuterium-labeled substrates (both linear 38 c and branched 37 c) and analysis of the products (41-43) by (2)H{(1)H} NMR spectroscopy in a chiral liquid crystal matrix allowed the stereochemical pathways of the reaction to be distinguished. With ligand (S)-(+)-12 c, the matched enantiomer of branched substrate was found to be (S)-5, which was converted into (R)-6 with very high regio- and stereoselectivity via a process that involves net retention of stereochemistry. The mismatched enantiomer of the branched substrate was found to be (R)-5, which was also converted into (R)-6, that is, with apparent net inversion, but at a lower rate and with lower overall enantioselectivity. This latter feature, which may be termed a "memory effect", reduced the global enantioselectivity in the reaction of the racemic substrate (+/-)-5. The stereochemical pathway of the mismatched manifold has been shown also to be one of net retention, the apparent inversion occurring through equilibration via an Mo-allyl intermediate prior to nucleophilic attack. Incomplete equilibration leads to the memory effect and thus to lower enantioselectivity. Analysis of the mismatched manifold over the course of the reaction revealed that the memory effect is progressively attenuated with the nascent global selectivity increasing substantially as the reaction proceeds. The origin of this effect is suggested to be the depletion of CO sources in the reaction mixture, which attenuates turnover rate and thus facilitates greater equilibrium. The linear substrate was also converted into the branched product with net syn stereochemistry, as shown by isotopic labeling. An analogous process operates in the generation of small quantities of linear product from branched substrate.

Gamma-alumina: a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study.

The structure of gamma-alumina (Al21+1/3square2+2/3O32) crystals obtained as a product of a corrosion reaction between beta-sialon and steel was refined in the space group Fd3m. The oxygen sublattice is fully occupied. The refined occupancy parameters are 0.83 (3), 0.818 (13), 0.066 (14) and 0.044 (18) for Al ions in 8a, 16d, 16c and 48f positions, respectively. The Al ions are distributed over octahedral and tetrahedral sites in a 63:37 ratio, with 6% of all Al ions occupying non-spinel positions.

2-anilinomethylene-3-oxobutanenitrile: an X-ray and density functional theory study.

Molecules of the title compound, C11H10N2O, are effectively planar. In the crystal structure, they are stabilized primarily by electrostatic interactions, as the dipole moment of the molecule is 4.56 D. In addition, the molecules are linked by weak C-H...N and C-H...O hydrogen bonds. An analysis of bonding conditions in the molecule was carried out using natural bond orbital (NBO) formalism.

2-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)-4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazoline: X-ray and density functional theory study.

In the crystal structure of the title compound, C(11)H(13)NO(2), there are strong intermolecular O-H...N hydrogen bonds which, together with weak intramolecular C-H...O hydrogen bonds, lead to the formation of infinite chains of molecules, held together by weak intermolecular C-H...O hydrogen bonds. A theoretical investigation of the hydrogen bonding, based on density functional theory (DFT) employing periodic boundary conditions, is in agreement with the experimental data. The cluster approach shows that the influence of the crystal field and of hydrogen-bond formation are responsible for the deformation of the 2-oxazoline ring, which is not planar and adopts a (4)T(3) ((C3)T(C2)) conformation.

Synthesis, a case of isostructural packing, and antimicrobial activity of silver(I)quinoxaline nitrate, silver(I)(2,5-dimethylpyrazine) nitrate and two related silver aminopyridine compounds.

The synthesis and low temperature crystal structures of [Ag(quinoxaline)]n(NO3)n, 1, [Ag(2,5-dimethylpyrazine)(NO3)]n, 2 and [Ag4(3-aminopyridine)4(NO3)4]n 3 are presented. The quinoxaline compound forms a 1D coordination polymer with the characteristic linear 2-coordination figure of silver(I), the N-Ag-N angle being 164.2(1) degrees, and only weak silver-nitrate interactions. In addition there is an interaction giving pairs of parallel chains as the main structural theme. The 2,5-dimethylpyrazine compound has approximately trigonal-planar coordination, also binding one nitrate at the relatively short Ag-O distances 2.444(3) angstroms and 2.484(3) angstroms, respectively, for the two crystallographically different silver atoms. This also results in a 1D coordination polymer that, despite the large differences in the Ag(I) coordination environment, is isostructural with 1. [Ag4(3-aminopyridine)4(NO3)4]n 3 forms a 2D coordination polymer by bridging nitrate ions. The antimicrobial activity of 1-3, and also of [Ag3(2-aminopyridine)4](NO3)3, 4 was screened for 13 different pathogens and substantial activity was shown for 1 against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC 4 microg cm(-3)) and somewhat lower activity was registered against Sarcina lutea and Salmonella typhi for 1, Bordetella bronchiseptica for 2, Salmonella typhi and Pseudomonas aeruginosa for 3, and Escherichia coli and Shigella sonnie for 3 (MIC 8 microg cm(-3)). Only low activity was shown against the yeast Candida albicans for 1, 2 and 4 whereas no activity against this pathogen was registered for 3.

Dipotassium tetrachromate(VI), K2Cr4O13.

The structure of dipotassium tetrachromium(VI) tridecaoxide, K2Cr4O13, has been determined from single-crystal X-ray data collected at 173 (2) K on a racemically twinned crystal with monoclinic Pc space-group symmetry. The structure is composed of discrete [Cr4O13]2- zigzag chains held together by the charge-balancing potassium ions. The conformations adopted by the tetrachromate anion in alkali metal salts and Cr8O21 are different and can be divided into three categories.

Second-degree twinning and dynamic disorder in the crystal structure of deca-dodecasil 3R.

The structure of deca-dodecasil 3R (DD-3R), Si120O240, a very well suited material for the synthesis of inorganic/organic composites structured on a nanometer level, has been investigated in detail. So far, a highly complicated twinning has hampered its structure description at a desirable level of accuracy. This twinning has now been resolved and a new structure determination is presented. Structure refinement in the R\bar 3 space group revealed a large, unusually shaped atomic displacement ellipsoid for oxygen-bridging units (tetrahedra), bridging Si-O bonds shorter than expected and the linear Si-O-Si' bond angle dictated by special positions at a threefold axis. A structure model based on a statistically disordered bridging O atom improved the accuracy of the Si-O bonds of interest, but provided unacceptable O-O contacts. To solve this dilemma, ab initio NVT molecular dynamics calculations were performed to study the possible configurations. Wavelet analysis of the time variations of selected Si-O distances pointed to a synchronous shift of the whole building units (tetrahedra). Low-frequency features of the calculated phonon density of states agree well with the published INS (inelastic neutron scattering) spectra of several silica polymorphs, indicating that the nature of the disorder in DD-3R is dynamic rather than static.

Three isomeric forms of hydroxyphenyl-2-oxazoline: 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2-oxazoline, 2-(3-hydroxyphenyl)-2-oxazoline and 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-oxazoline.

Crystal structures are reported for three isomeric compounds, namely 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2-oxazoline, (I), 2-(3-hydroxyphenyl)-2-oxazoline, (II), and 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-oxazoline, (III), all C9H9NO2 [systematic names: 2-(4,5-dihydro-1,3-oxazol-2-yl)phenol, (I), 3-(4,5-dihydro-1,3-oxazol-2-yl)phenol, (II), and 4-(4,5-dihydro-1,3-oxazol-2-yl)phenol, (III)]. In these compounds, the deviation from coplanarity of the oxazoline and benzene rings is dependent on the position of the hydroxy group on the benzene ring. The coplanar arrangement in (I) is stabilized by a strong intramolecular O-H...N hydrogen bond. Surprisingly, the 2-oxazoline ring in molecule B of (II) adopts a 3T4 (C2TC3) conformation, while the 2-oxazoline ring in molecule A, as well as that in (I) and (III), is nearly planar, as expected. Tetramers of molecules of (II) are formed and they are bound together via weak C-H...N hydrogen bonds. In (III), strong intermolecular O-H...N hydrogen bonds and weak intramolecular C-H...O hydrogen bonds lead to the formation of an infinite chain of molecules perpendicular to the b direction. This paper also reports a theoretical investigation of hydrogen bonds, based on density functional theory (DFT) employing periodic boundary conditions.

threo-2-(2,6-dimethoxyphenoxy)-1-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)propane-1,3-diol: a conformational study.

In the crystal structure of the title compound, C19H24O8, the molecules adopt a conformation in which the bulky 2,6-dimethoxyphenoxy and 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl groups are almost as far apart as possible. The C(aryl)...C(aryl) distance is 4.8766 (19) A, which is close to the calculated maximum value (4.92 A). The C(aryl)-C-C-O(aryloxy) torsion angle is 173.76 (11) degrees and the C(benzylic)-C-O-C(aryl) torsion angle is 149.09 (11) degrees. The conformation is compared with those of related lignin model compounds. The hydrogen-bonding pattern is discussed in terms of graph-set theory.

21-deoxycortisone (17alpha-hydroxy-4-pregnene-3,11,20-trione).

The title compound, C21H28O4, a synthetic glucocorticoid, crystallizes with a single molecule in the asymmetric unit. Ring A is almost in a half-chair conformation, rings B and C are almost in chair conformations, and ring D is between a twist and a 13beta-envelope conformation. The A/B ring junction is quasi-trans, whereas the B/C and C/D ring junctions both approach trans characteristics. The molecule as a whole is slightly convex towards the beta side, with an angle of 9.60 (2) degrees between the C10-C19 and C13-C18 vectors. Molecular-packing and hydrogen-bonding (both intra- and intermolecular) interactions play a major role in the structural association of the compound.

Pseudo-merohedrally twinned tetrakis(1H-imidazole-kappaN3)bis(N-nitrocyanamidato-kappaN)copper(II).

Crystals of the title complex, [Cu(CN3O2)2(C3H4N2)4], the structure of which has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction at 304 K, appear to be pseudo-merohedrally twinned. Transformation to a monoclinic C-centred cell was necessary in order to derive the twin law. Twin refinement in a triclinic unit cell significantly reduced the R value. The asymmetric unit of the triclinic cell consists of one molecule in a general position and two half entities with the Cu atom on a centre of inversion. The coordination of the Cu atom is quasi-octahedral, with four imidazole N-atom donors in the equatorial plane and two cyano N atoms from the N-nitrocyanamidate anion in axial positions. Owing to symmetry in the centrosymmetric molecules, the trans imidazole ligands are parallel, while those in the non-centrosymmetric molecule make angles of 22.8 (2) and 77.9 (2) degrees .

Pseudo-merohedrally twinned praseodymium hexacyanoferrate(III) tetrahydrate.

Crystals of the title compound, diaquahexa-mu-cyano-ferrate(III)praseodymium(III) dihydrate, Pr[Fe(CN)(6)].4H(2)O or [PrFe(CN)(6)(H(2)O)(2)].2H(2)O, are twinned with three components. The Pr atom is coordinated by eight atoms, viz. six N and two symmetry-related water O atoms. The Pr polyhedron (Pr has site symmetry m2m, Wyckoff position 4c) is linked to an FeC(6) octahedron (Fe located on a site with imposed 2/m symmetry, Wyckoff position 4b) through N atoms, forming an infinite array. The second (symmetry independent) water molecule lies on a mirror plane, is not included in coordination and is weakly hydrogen bonded to N atoms.

Synthesis and structure determination of some nonanomerically C-C-linked serine glycoconjugates structurally related to mannojirimycin.

The Bucherer-Bergs reaction of methyl 2,3-O-isopropylidene-alpha-d-lyxo-hexofuranosid-5-ulose gave (4'S)-4'-carbamoyl-4'-[methyl (4R)-2,3-O-isopropylidene-beta-l-erythrofuranosid-4-C-yl]-oxazolidin-2'-one instead of expected hydantoins. A mixture of hydantoins--(5'R)-triphenylmethoxymethyl-5'-[methyl (4R)-2,3-O-isopropylidene-beta-l-erythrofuranosid-4-C-yl]-imidazolidin-2',4'-dione and (5'S)-triphenylmethoxymethyl-5'-[methyl (4R)-2,3-O-isopropylidene-beta-l-erythrofuranosid-4-C-yl]-imidazolidin-2',4'-dione was obtained from the 5-ulose having protected primary OH group at C-6. The 4'-S configuration of 2 as well as 5'-S configuration of (5'S)-hydroxymethyl-5'-[methyl (4R)-2,3-O-isopropylidene-beta-l-erythrofuranosid-4-C-yl]-imidazolidin-2',4'-dione (9) was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Corresponding alpha-amino acid--methyl (5S)-5-amino-5-C-carboxy-5-deoxy-alpha-d-lyxo-hexofuranoside (alternative name: 2-[methyl (4R)-beta-l-erythrofuranosid-4-C-yl]-l-serine) (11) was obtained from the hydantoin 9 by acid hydrolysis of the isopropylidene and trityl groups followed by basic hydrolysis of the hydantoin ring. Analogous derivatives with 5-R configuration, formed in a minority, were also isolated and characterised.
