Azathioprine combined with a low dose of steroid (20mg of prednisolone) commencing the day following transplantation has been used for immunosuppression for 151 consecutive renal transplants in 141 patients (146 cadaver grafts, 5 living related donor grafts). Immunosuppression was satisfactory as 109 grafts function from 6 months to 10 years, 17 of 42 grafts lost failed from rejection. No patient died from infection before 90 days, 4 died later from infection, 2 associated with anti-rejection therapy. Seven patients developed gastrointestinal complications, 1 died; 4 developed diabetes, all survived; only 1 patient developed avascular necrosis of bone.
Of 54 male psychiatric patients undergoing dexamethasone suppression tests in a clinical setting, 40% of those with a major depressive disorder showed escape from suppression over the 24 hours after dexamethasone administration, while all of the patients with schizophrenia, neurosis, alcoholism, and drug abuse showed normal pituitary-adrenal suppression. Only 10% of the depressed patients showed resistance to suppression 8 hours after dexamethasone administration. There was no difference between depressed patients who did and did not show escape from suppression in type of previous episodes, family history, symptoms, or medication. However, those who showed escape tended to respond better to treatment and to be rated as having a more severe depression. The theoretical and clinical implications of these findings are not yet clear.

Twenty-four hours after a tetracycline injection, the unimpeded, and more rapidly erupting, mouse mandibular incisor contained 20% to 44% more tetracycline than the contralateral, uncut incisor. It was concluded that the increased tetracycline incorporation reflected a higher rate of mineralization associated with faster tooth formation in the unimpeded tooth. By measuring the amount of tetracycline which became incorporated at different times after an incisor was shortened, it was possible to investigate an early stage of the response of the incisor to cutting. A significant increase in the capacity of the tooth to incorporate tetracycline was detectable 4 h after shortening the tooth, and this was maximal after another 4 h.

Several dimensions of psychological functioning of bipolar manic-depressives in remission were investigated. The following hypotheses were examined: (1) During remission, these individuals exhibit psychological maladjustment or a lack of positive mental health. (2) Bipolar manic-depressives are characterized by strong external orientations. The Personal Orientation Inventory, Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale, Levenson's Internal and Powerful Others Locus of Control Scales, and the Embedded Figures Test were administered to matched groups of 35 bipolar manic-depressives and 35 normal comparison subjects. Discriminant analysis disclosed no significant differences between the two groups on measures of positive mental health and on measures of external orientation. The relationship between these results and the etiology and treatment of manic-depressive disorder is briefly discussed, as well as the contradiction these findings pose to current views of this disorder pervasive among professional and lay populations.
There is considerable interest in the relationship between testosterone and sexual behavior in men, but the few available data bearing on this issue are inconclusive. This study is an attempt to clarify the relationships among various components of sexuality and serum testosterone concentration through examination of these variables in a large homogenous group of men. Serum testosterone concentration was determined in two blood samples taken 1 week apart from 101 young adult men. Subjects reported their frequencies of various sexual activities and level of sexual interest. Testosterone concentrations in the two blood samples were highly correlated, indicating considerable intraindividual consistency. There was considerable variance among subjects in both mean testosterone and reported sexual activity. Testosterone concentration did not correlate with the sexual activity and interest variables. These results provide evidence that differences among men in circulating testosterone concentration within the normal range do not account for differences in sexual activity and interest. It is also unlikely that variations in sexual activity account for differences in testosterone concentration.

Changes in local cerebral blood flow during sodium nitroprusside hypotension were measured using the hydrogen electrode technique. At mean arterial pressures from 90% to 50% of control values, local cerebral blood flow showed a significant decrease by 20%. When blood pressure was reduced below 50%, the local cerebral blood flow increased significantly and approached control levels. It is suggested that the flow increase may be due to local hypoxia. Associated with this increase were electrocorticogram changes indicative of hypoxia. The significant decrease in mean local cerebral blood flow and the large range of flows seen during mild hypotension indicate that autoregulation is impaired. During hypotension, intracranial pressure increased by, at most, 3 mm Hg. Cardiac output was usually unaffected and was never decreased by more than 20%.

The value of neuroendocrine techniques for providing information regarding the pathophysiology of psychotic disorders is largely dependent on clarification of the relationships among psychologic state, neural activity, and neuroendocrine regulation. This study presents a strategy for examining the interface between neurochemical activity, psychologic state, and neuroendocrine regulation. Psychologic state and serum growth hormone (GH) and cortisol were monitored following administration of methylphenidate hydrochloride, a drug that appears to preferentially affect central dopamine regulation. While individuals varied in both their endocrine and psychologic responses to methylphenidate, the general effects were GH elevation, euphoria, and activation with elation, the most pronounced psychologic effect. Subjects who showed GH elevation became elated while those who did not show a GH response did not become elated. Elation and GH release following administration of methylphenidate may be mediated by the same neurochemical events.
