[On the problem of radiation damage caused by roentgenography of the thorax (author's transl)].

The risk factors for radiation induced cancer (no dose threshold) given by UNSCEAR and ICRP are discussed. Under the (uncertain) supposition of the validity of these values for the roentgendiagnostic the number of cases induced by the mass screenings (VRRU) are estimated (lung and breast cancer, leukaemia). For 30 radiophotofluorographs of the thorax per person during the whole life there may be induced about 180 cancer of the lung, 5 of the breast and 27 leukaemias each year. These numbers are compared with the cases per year of lung tuberculosis and lung cancer found by VRRU. The connection between the cases of cancer and the irradiation cannot be validated statistically.

[On experiences with the new ultrasonic inhalation generator TuR USI 50 (author's transl)].

The paper deals with our experiences with the new TuR ultrasonic nebulizer USI 50, whose nebulizer chamber consists of glass and stainless steel. It works with an electronic feed system and has an electronically controlled heater for the production of thermoaerosols. In an alternating series of nearly 1,000 inhalations with normal and thermoaerosol, about 3/4 of the patients preferred thermoaerosol, about 20% preferred normal aerosol while 10% did not find any difference. According to our experiences the TuR USI 50 can be recommended for medical application.

Aerosols

[The measurement of aerosol density of ultrasonic inhalation generators (author's transl)].

Measurements of the behaviour of ultrasonic USI-Nebulizers during operation were carried out using a simple photometric arrangement. It shows, that the electrically controlled feed system of USI 3 and USI 50 is superior to the far simpler chicken feed system of USI 3 and USI 50 is superior to the far simpler chicken feed system. For the inhalation of small amounts of medicament not using the feed system the measuring procedure for the remaining amount of medicament should be reconsidered.

Evaluation of image quality in tomographic imaging.

Modulation Transfer Functions (MTF) for tomographic imaging with linear, circular, hypocycloidal and spiral motion are given. They may be determined experimentally from tomographs of slits or line pair test patterns. In some cases calculation of the MTF from the blur pattern by Fourier transformation is possible. All tomographic MTFS show the same oscillatory behaviour as MTFS of focal spots, resulting in spurious structures and contours in the tomogram. A quantity named signal/spurios signal ratio (SSR) is introduced as a figure of merit. Effective exposure angles are determined from the MTF and compared with the commmonly used 'geometric' exposure angles which result from maximum tube elongations.

Tomography, X-Ray

[Optimal distances for direct radiographic magnification].

This paper deals with the theoretical basis for radiographic magnification. In particular, the relationship between focal size and optimal magnification for various systems is discussed. Maximal resolution was chosen as the criterion for best results. It has been shown that resolution (Lp-mm) can be improved by the reciprocal of the focal spot and for optimal magnification (see article) where f is focal spot size and AVBW is resolution of the imaging system.
