Lhermitte-Duclos disease--its minimal lesions in electron microscope data and CT findings.

Clinical, necropsy, and electron microscope findings are described for a patient with Lhermitte-Duclos disease. Evidence that the disease originated from granule cell precursors was obtained from electron microscopy and from reconstruction in step serial sections of microscopic lesions found in the contralateral cerebellar hemisphere. The latter indicate a process of proliferation and hypertrophy of granule cells at their site of origin in the superficial granular layer, along their normal path of migration, or else at their destination in the cerebellar granular layer.

[Monitoring of udder health by quarterwise measurement of initial milking samples for electric conductivity--results of serial examinations of individual animals and herds].

More than 400 cows were involved in three experimental series in which quarterwise measurement was applied continuously, even daly in a number of instances, to initial milking samples, with the view to establishing the electric conductivity of the milk. Electric cell count determination, high-speed mastitis tests, clinical examination of udders and secretions, and bacteriological milk tests were complementarily conducted. The major purpose of the effort was to find out whether milk conductivity measurement would be helpful in detecting subclinical mastitis. Conductivity measurement, in addition to being in fair agreement with milk cell count data, proved to be suitable an approach to high-continuity monitoring of udder condition, with no disruption of the production process being required. Specification of limit values and diagnostic value of differences between quarter milking data from one and the same udder were additional subjects of this study.

[Measurement of electric conductivity in first quarter milking samples for comparative assessment of udder health in large dairy cow herds].

Described in this paper is an experimental milking kit by which to collect first quarter milking samples directly from the milk pipeline system during full operation of the milking parlor. Measurement of electric conductivity of milk samples thus collected during the milking process may provide information on the occurrence of subclinical mastitis in the herd concerned. Discussed are results obtained from comparative measurement of milk conductivity, indirect determination of milk cell counts, as well as from clinical udder checks and bacteriological milk tests in seven large herds.

[Diagnostic significance of lactose level of milk. 2. Lactose level in first quarter milk samples in various udder disorders].

The behaviour of lactose levels in first quarter milk was studied in the context of a large dairy herd in the presence of various udder health defects. The results were related to other criteria generally used in mastitis diagnosis. The lactose level in first quarter milk was found to be a diagnostic criterion which was properly applicable to detecting and identifying clinical and subclinical mastitis. A limit value of 4.6 per cent has been commonly assumed in literature and proved to be a sound basis for udder health assessment, provided that the given phase of lactation is taken into due consideration (exclusion of cows in the first month post partum as well as of aged milking cows from the seventh month of lactation). Also reported in this paper are results regarding milk lactose and its correlations with other criteria for mastitis diagnosis. A close correlation was found to exist between lactose level and electric conductivity of first quarter milk.

Naked axon bundles enclosed by single segments of myelin sheaths in the nerves of non-dystrophic C57BL-ob/+mice.

Bundles of axons enclosed by a single myelin sheath were found in the peripheral nerves of heterozygous obese C57BL-ob/+mice. Serial sections showed them to consist of two to forty naked axons encompassed by a common cuff of myelin formed by a single Schwann cell, with adjoining non-myelinated Schwann cells protruding from either side into the cuff. These structures are similar to those found in dystrophic mice, but there were no signs of dystrophy in the obese mice. It is suggested that the axon bundles result from a disturbance of early myelination, presumably of the phase of Schwann cell proliferation or of the communication between Schwann cells and axons.

Expression of Thy-1 antigen in reactive endoneurial capillaries of the rat following peripheral nerve damage.

Immunohistochemical staining of Thy-1 antigen was studied in rat peripheral nerves shortly after a complete crush lesion and after an epineural depot injection of lysophosphatidylcholine-palmitate (lysoPC). The Thy-1 antigen was expressed in endoneurial capillaries after 20-30 h and was visible previous to alterations in the axolemma or other signs of neural damage with the exception of endoneurial oedema formation. Thy-1 positive capillaries were restricted to the vicinity of degenerating nerve fibres in partially damaged nerves following epineural depot injection of lysoPC. It is therefore concluded that expression of the Thy-1 antigen in response to peripheral nerve damage in reactive endoneurial capillaries is an active process and not due to diffusion from degenerating axolemmata. Thy-1 staining could be used as a marker of reactive endoneurial capillaries in pathological conditions of peripheral nerves.
