[Transformation of 19-norgestagens to estrogens by rumen microorganisms].

The 19-norgestagens norethisterone acetate (17 alpha-ethinyl-4-oestren-17 beta-ol-3-on-17-acetate), ethinodiol diacetate (17 alpha-ethinyl-4-oestren-3 beta, 17 beta-diol-3, 17-diacetate), and norgestrol (17 alpha-ethinyl-18-methyl-4-oestren-17 beta-ol-3-on) are transformed to ethinyloestradiol or 18-methyl homologue by microorganisms of cattle rumen. Such transformation of steroid gestagens to oestrogens is likely to offer an explanation for the occurrence of oestrogen effects which had been observed during synchronised oestrus of cattle following oral application of 19-norgestagens.

[Morphokinetic effect of PMSG and sex steroids on parts of the cerebral-hypophyseal-gonadal axis of anestrous sheep].

The action of gonadotropins and of sexual steroids on links of the cerebro-hypophyseo-gonadal axis can be morphologically quantified in sheep. In that context, karyovolumetry is a highly dependabel and information-yielding quantitative morphological method. In studies conducted with anoestrous sheep and described in this paper that method has helped to detect an inhibitory effect of PMSG and progesterone upon the activity of neurons of the medial preoptic nucleus of the hypothalamus. The two sexual steroids produced even stronger inhibition of neuronal activity of the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus. Such results, when evaluated and re-used under the adequate test conditions might be helpful in identifying structures of central nervous disorders along the cerebro-hypophyseo-gonadal axis and produce reliable information on acting points or general action (activation or inhibition) of active substances as well as on the course of control and regulatory mechanisms.

[Hormonal desexing of boars with chlormadinone acetate].

Chloromadinone acetate produces a dependable desexualising effect on boar by contant administration in feed rations of 30 mg per die over 70 days. Sexual odour thus can be widely eliminated. Other aspects studied in a group of 107 boars are body weight development, sexual behaviour, slaughter yield, and skin quality.

[Prediction of spontaneous abortion by vaginal cytologic smears (author's transl)i1].

Vaginal smears were obtained from 175 women during the first four months of pregnancy weekly and the Karyopycnotic Index and the Eosinophilic Index encountered by phase contrast microscopy. The normal values were listed our by percentils. The development of KPI and Eo I during early pregnancy were compaired in three groups of patients: 1, 120 women with normal early pregnancy, 2.20 women with threatened abortion but good following up of later pregnancy, and 3. 35 women with spontaneous abortion. Even 4 weeks before abortion vaginal smears changed to pathological values in about 40% of all patients with spontaneous abortion. Women with threatened abortion but good outcome of pregnancy used to have normal KPI and Eo I.

[Quantifiable morphokinesis in members of the hypothalamo-adenohypophyseogonadal axis of hormonally castrated boars. 2. Studies on norgestrel treated boars].

Norgestrel treatment of boars differed from analogous chloromandinone acetate treatment in that no significant morphokinetic effect was recordable from all parts of the hypothalamic-adenohypophyseal-gonadal axis. The morphometric parameters as well as the histological pattern obtained of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland appear to prove that in boar the antigonadotropic effect of norgestrel is lower than that of chloromadinone acetate, with dosage and duration of treatment identical.

[Quantifiable morphokinesis of parts of the hypothalamo-adenohypophyseal-gonadal axis in hormonally castrated boars. 3. Studies of boars following treatment with steroid test substance 547].

Morphokinetic effects caused in parts of the hypothalamic adenohypophyseogonadal axis of boars by treatment, using No. 547 steroid test substance (ZIMET, Jena) were to some extent identical with those resulting from analogous CAP application (inhibition of testicular androgen producers, anterior lobe of the pituitary gland, nucleus praeopticus medialis) or those following analogous norgestrel treatment (testes weight, tubule length). The findings recorded were largely attributed to the androgenic properties of No. 547 steroid test substance.

[Quantifiable morphokinesis on parts of the hypothalamo-adenohypophyseal-gonadal axis of hormonally castrated boars. I. Studies on boars treated with chlormadinone acetate].

A clearly morphokinetic effect was recorded from the parts of the hypothalamo-adenohypophyseo-gonadal axis in boars that had been treated with chloromadinone acetate (CAP). Luteinising hormone release is inhibited by CAP, which is reflected in an increase of luteinising hormone cells in their storage form. This leads to statistically significant decline in androgenic testicular tissue percentage and in the cell nucleus volumes of Leydig's cells. Excessive weight decrease of the testicle is caused primarily by some 60 per cent reduction in tube length. The neurons of the tested hypothalamic nuclear region, that is the nucleus praeopticus medialis, have shown that in treated animals cell nucleus volumes were significantly depressed.

[Planned control of reproduction processes in industrialized cattle production].

Reference is made to the authors' own experience and to evaluated literature in an account of possibilities which so far have been explored for planned control of reproduction processes in industrialised cattle production. Synchronisation of oestrus in heifer has been found to be suitable for reproduction control even under conditions of industrialised production. The method has been in use on several farms. Synchronisation of oestrus in cow is an approach which still is in the process of translation into practice. Obtainable advantages, like those in the context of heifer, will include better job conditions. Systematic puerperal monitoring, too, will yield positive effects in controlling post-partum readiness of cow for reproduction. Results so far achieved include progress towards the introduction of a complex reproduction technology in cattle production. Before such complete system of reproduction control can be used, further studies are required into some fundamental aspects of the problem, including calving control, pregnancy examination, and gravidity hagiene.

[Studies on the use of megestrol acetate for estrus synchronization in heifers].

Megestrol acetate has been tested for its applicability to synchronisation of oestrus in 463 mature heifers in the framework of preclinical and clinical experiments. Clinical tests and studies in the context of laboratory diagnostics have shown that 40 mg/die megestrol acetate, administered in two applications with twelve hours in-between and over 15 days, are necessary for maximum synchronisation effect. The resulting oestrus was found to be prolonged, with ovulations taking place within two or three days. Technological requirements in this context are discussed. Megestrol acetate is found to be suitable for oestrus synchronisation in heifer. Tests conducted under industrialised conditions have shown conception rates to be identical with those obtained by administration of chloromadinone acetate.

[Studies on the excretion of estrogen in cows following oral and percutaneous (pour-on) administration of chlormadinone acetate].

The oestrogen levels were assessed in 180 urine samples taken from 20 cows. The animals had received over 15 days 40 mg one-per-cent oily solution of chloromadinone acetate. The solution had been applied orally or by pour-on methods. The curves of oestrogen excretion were identical for both methods of application, both during and after completed administration. In other words, the effect obtainable from pour-on application is just as good as that obtainable from oral administration.

[External cephalic version using tocalytica (author's transl)].

1. This report relates our experiences with 63 external versions of random breech or transverse presentations in cranial presentation between the 35th and 40th week of pregnancy p.m. using tocolytica. Only 22 of the 63 versions were successful when only tocolytica were administered. In 17 cases from a total of 34 the external version was successful under subsequent general anasthesia. 2. Of these 39, in whose case an external version of the foetus was successful, there were only two caesarian deliveries. The number of caesarian sections in the case of breech presentation on the other hand totalled, in the year the present investigation was carried out, 62%. By external version the number of caesarian sections performed on those women whose external version was successful was indirectly reduced twelve-fold. 3. It was not possible to turn 24 of the total of 63 foetuses - either by tocolytica or under general anaesthesia. The following factors - partly in combination - were responsible for this: 10 tendencies to contraction; 9 cases of a relatively narrow amniotic cavity: 3 cases of adiposity of the abdominal wall; 3 dorso-anterior or -posterior presentations; one case of "extended legs"; one relatively broad amniotic cavity. 4. An external version can cause damage to the placenta: a) in the case of 6 out of 22 women under obervation foetomaternal transfusion was detected. b) In once case materno-foetel transfusion with polyglobulism of the new-born was suspected. c) In one case a premature partial abruption of the placenta had to be assumed. The danger of damage to the placenta is especially great when the placenta is located next to the anterior wall of the uterus. 5. In 40% of the cases a brief deceleration of the foetal heart-frequency occurred immediately after the external version. Two cases were observed in which the foetal heart-frequency remained low over a period of several minutes. 6. In 5 out of the total of 63 cases a caesarian section was performed after the external version because of the danger of intra-uterine asphyxia. There were 4 cases of chronic insufficiency of the placenta and one of premature abruption of the placenta. 7. Suggestions are made concerning the future selection of breech presentations for external versions.

[Pour-on method of administering chlormadinone acetate for estrus synchronization in heifers].

Experiments with chlormadinone (Bovisynchron) on 380 heifers and 60 cows showed that the drug was absorbed following pour-on application. A volume of 2 ml was rubbed into the skin of the back anterior to the sacrum, once daily for 15 days. Residual amounts were removed 24 hours after the final application by washing the hair coat with dimethyl sulphoxide solution. Insemination was performed at the same time as after oral administration. The pour-on method was particularly suitable for heifers and cows out at pasture.
