Concurrent validity of the task-oriented assessment component of the Bay Area Functional Performance Evaluation with the American Association on Mental Deficiency Adaptive Behavior Scale.

This study was designed to test the concurrent validity of the revised Task-Oriented Assessment (TOA) component of the Bay Area Functional Performance Evaluation (BaFPE) (Bloomer & Williams, 1979) with Part 1 of the American Association on Mental Deficiency Adaptive Behavior Scale (ABS) (Nihira, Foster, Shellhaas, & Leland, 1969, 1974) and to develop a means of interpretation for the numeric scores on the TOA. Both measures were administered to 67 psychiatric inpatients within the first 14 days of admission. Low to moderate correlations were found between the TOA tasks and functional parameters and the ABS domains. Because the TOA shows low concurrent validity with the ABS, only limited interpretive descriptions for TOA scores could be developed.

The Bay Area Functional Performance Evaluation: development and standardization.

The Bay Area Functional Performance Evaluation (BaFPE) was developed in 1977-1978 to meet the need for a reliable and valid instrument for assessing the general functional performance of patients treated in psychiatric occupational therapy. It consists of two subtests, the Task-Oriented Assessment and the Social Interaction Scale. These subtests evaluate two aspects of general functional performance--task-oriented and social behavior--that are important in assessing clients with emotional, cognitive, or behavioral deficits. This article traces the instrument's standardization over a 10-year period of development and includes a discussion of its theoretical premises, its content, and the revisions to date. Research on the reliability and validity of the BaFPE is summarized.

Determination of buflomedil hydrochloride [2',4',6'-trimethoxy-4-(pyrrolidinyl)butyrophenone hydrochloride] by reversed-phase ion-pair high-performance liquid chromatography.

A simple and rapid method for the determination of buflomedil hydrochloride [2',4',6'-trimethoxy-4-(pyrrolidinyl)butyrophenone hydrochloride] in pharmaceutical formulations by reversed-phase ion-pair high-performance liquid chromatography is described. The sample is dissolved in methanol and 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene is added as an internal standard. The resulting solution is chromatographed on an octadecylsilane column using ion-pair partition chromatography with lauryl sulphate as the counter ion. A 25-microliter injection (containing 3.5 micrograms of buflomedil hydrochloride) produces a 60% full-scale peak (0.2 a.u.f.s.) at the absorbance maximum (275 nm). The relative standard deviation of the method ranges from 1 to 3%, depending on the particular tablet formulation examined. Excipients present in the preparations do not interfere.

Feeding program for the institutionalized mentally retarded.

A program using techniques from behavior modification and motivation theories was initiated to improve dining room behavior in a large residential center for the mentally retarded. The program was graduated into three levels to deal with behaviors ranging from normal eating habits to total lack of self-feeding skills. The effectiveness of this program, indicated by behavioral ratings taken both before the program began and eight weeks after the program was in operation, was shown in significantly improved eating habits.

A quarterway house for adult psychiatric patients.

An intermediate step between living on a hospital ward and living in the community was considered necessary for many acute and chronic patients preparing to leave Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center in New York. A quarterway house program was initiated to help patients acquire the skills and coping mechanisms they could not easily acquire on a ward setting, but which they would need to meet the demands of living in the community. The quarterway house program described may offer ideas to others who are attempting to help patients prepare for living outside a state hospital.
