[Psoriasis vulgaris--decrease of serum immune complexes following photochemotherapy (author's transl)].

By means of a polyethylene glycol precipitate method [6] circulating immune complexes were examinated in increased concentration in 56 percent of the sera from psoriatic patients. The effect of photochemotherapy with external administration of 8-methoxypsoralen followed by irradiation with UVA was investigated. In 12 of 13 cases the serum immune complex concentration after the therapy was normal.

[New studies on the pathogenesis of lupus erythematosus].

The pathogenesis of the lupus erythematosus results from co-operation of three principles: (1) genetical disposition, (2) increased reactivity of the immune system, (3) different exogenic influences. The genetical disposition is confirmed by family investigations, metabolic disorders and immune anomalies as well as by parallels to animal models. The reaction manner of the immune system is genetically determined. Exogenic factors influence the immune system (behaviour) either as starter or by modifying the genetical material. The most striking humoral immune phenomenon is an immense number of (auto-)antibodies. Investigations of xeroderma pigmentosum as well as with DNA of different antigenity have shown that an increase of the antigenicity is unlikely for this phenomenon. In the serum of patients there were established and partially characterized factors (mitogens, granulocytic adherence-factor) for increasing the immune reactivity. The increase of such factors may be the sequence of a T-suppressor cell-defect. Like-wise no interdigitating cells in systemic lupus erythematosus have been found, cells which may be responsible for the terminal differentiation of T-lymphocytes. The mode of action of exogenic factors is represented and discussed with the example of the UV provocation.

Increased immune response in the acute phase of systemic lupus erythematosus and psoriatic arthritis caused by serum factors.

In the acute phase of systemic lupus erythematosus the serum contains factors, with molecular weights ranging from 780,000 daltons to 1.5 million daltons, which induce blast transformation of autologous lymphocytes. In addition to the high-molecular weight components, low-molecular weight factors (75,000 and 160,000 daltons) which also induce an increase in lymphocytic transformation have also been demonstrated. In contrast to the high-molecular weight components the low-molecular factors stimulate the transformation of autologous and homologous lymphocytes. During transformation, lysis of autologous target fibroblasts occurs. The low-molecular weight mitogenic components remain stable after 30 min at 56 degrees C. The significance of such mediators for the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus is discussed.

[Increased immune reactivity of exacerbated visceral lupus erythematosus: II. Reason and pathogenetic significance].

The sera of patients suffering from acute phase Lupus erythematosus visceralis contains factors inducing an increased blastoid transformation of lymphocytes: 1. one or some factors having a molecular weight ranging from 7.8 X 10(5) to 1.5 X 10(6) daltons. This active principle was shown to increase specifically the transformation of only the autologous lymphocytes. These high-molecular weights components are supposed to be antigen-antibody-complexes. 2. Beside those high-molecular weight components also low-molecular weight factors could be shown to increase the transformation of lymphocytes as well. By contrast these latter factors stimulate the transformation of autologous as well as homologous lymphocytes. The low-molecular weights components are stable after an incubation for 30 min after 56 degrees C and have molecular weights of about 7.5 X 10(4) and 1.6 X 10(5) daltons, respectively. Supposed the low molecular weight factors of the sera of exacerbated Lupus erythematosus visceralis are mitogenic lymphokines the increased activity of those mediators should possess pathogenic significance.

[Study on the mode of action of dithranol: increased lipid peroxidation and enzyme inhibition].

The results reported in connection with previously published data suggest the importance of increased lipid peroxidation in the epidermis after Dithranol treatment. Malonaldehyde, one of the main products of lipid peroxidation, reacts with epidermal phosphofructokinase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase to cause enzyme inactivation by cross-linking of the enzyme protein demonstrated by dodecyl sulphate electrophoresis. Enzyme inactivation leads to an inhibition of hexose monophosphate shunt and glycolysis. The effect on energy donating metabolism in psoriatic lesions is discussed.
