Survey of container-inhabiting mosquitoes in Clemson, South Carolina, with emphasis on Aedes albopictus.

A total of 530 oviposition trap samples were collected within a 10-km radius of Clemson University between March 30 and October 19, 1993. From 19,664 larvae reared from collected eggs, 7 species were identified: Aedes albopictus (89%), Ae. triseriatus (6.5%), Culex restuans (2.7%), Cx. territans (0.6%), Cx. pipiens complex (0.7%), Toxorhynchites rutilus septentrionalis (0.2%), and Orthopodomyia signifera (0.1%). This is the first record of Ae. albopictus in Clemson. Aedes aegypti was not found. Of the 41 ovitrap locations, 100% were positive for Ae. albopictus.

An initial investigation of the status of Borrellia burgodorferi and its suspected primary vector, Ixodes scapularis, in South Carolina.

Based on a survey of hunter-harvested deer, the suspected primary vector of Lyme disease in the Southeast, I. scapularis, is most prevalent in sandhill and coastal plain counties of South Carolina. None of 271 I. scapularis examined were found to be infected with the Lyme disease spirochete. However, many more specimens of I. scapularis, A. americanum, and other tick species must be examined before an accurate estimate of the probability of acquiring Lyme disease in South Carolina can be made.

A simple technique for determining relative toxicities of Bacillus thuringiensis var. Israelensis formulations against larval blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae).

A laboratory system for assaying the potency of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis formulations against larval blackflies was developed. An orbital shaker was used to create a water current in 250-ml Erlenmeyer flasks containing the test larvae. This system produced dose-mortality relationships with acceptable statistical parameters.

The Morgan Recharger: a new horn fly (Diptera: Muscidae) control device for beef cattle.

A 20% diazinon formulation was evaluated for control efficacy against the horn fly, Haematobia irritans (L.), in the Morgan Recharger (Morgan International Products, College Grove, Tenn.). The Morgan Recharger releases insecticide with a wicking system from an insecticide reservoir and can be attached to an animal's ear or tail. This device was most effective against the horn fly when used as an ear tag with two per head; horn fly counts did not exceed five flies per side through 8 wk. The diazinon formulation tested was released from the Morgan Recharger at a decreasing rate. The problems and potential of the Morgan Recharger as an effective horn fly control device are discussed.

What's new in administration.

The author reviews some of the trends and issues that have emerged in mental health administration over the past 20 years. They include the growing awareness of the need for clinicians to receive training in administration, the expanding body of knowledge in the management field, the availability of statistical methods to help manage uncertainty, and advances in treatment techniques and management information systems. Other developments are changes in the delivery of services, external controls on institutions and professionals, scarcity of resources, the important role of politics and public relations in ensuring adequate services, and sensitization to the social responsibility of the mental health system.
