Femoral plugging using cancellous bone.
Plugging the femoral canal with cancellous bone obtained from the femur so that the methylmethacrylate is put in under pressure makes an excellent cement-bone interface. The advantage of this method is that no foreign material is necessary, no special prefitting is necessary, and the cancellous bone adapts to any size canal. This procedure can be done while the methylmethacrylate is being prepared and does not increase the surgery time. Cancellous bone impactors are used for this purpose. The method has been used for more than six years in over 400 cases with satisfactory results. No complications have occurred to date from blocking the femoral canal with autologous bone.
