[Cholangiography and diuretics (author's transl)].

Contrast media intended for use in cholangiography are partly eliminated heterotropically via the kidneys. This can create difficulties in properly evaluating a cholangiogram. To overcome this problem, other protections are used, especially tomography (2, 3, 4, 5). This paper discusses of a third possibility, namely, whether the contrast medium in the renal calyces can be diluted by means of a diuretic, and so eliminated as a disturbing factor. The condition for this is, however, that excretion of the contrast medium via the bile ducts is not influenced in any way. This problem is investigated both experimentally and by means of a clinical study.

[Coarctation of abdominal aorta. Congenital or inflammatory origin? (author's transl)].

Angiography in a 28-year-old woman with hypertension revealed coarctation of the abdominal aorta in combination with stenoses of the proximal portions of visceral arteries. One year after the diagnosis was confirmed she had a cerebro-vascular accident. The patient was operated and the hypertension and neurological symptoms returned to normal. The various causes of abdominal coarctation are discussed.

[Radiological diagnosis of mediastinal tumors (author's transl)].

In most cases mediastinal lesions can correctly be differentiated from tumor simulating conditions. Their effect on normal anatomical structures of the mediastinum can be revealed by different methods; but separating benign from malignant masses on the base of the radiological findings is not reliable enough.

[Radiological observations of the chest in progressive scleroderma (author's transl)].

All available chest radiographs of 50 patients with progressive scleroderma have been freshly evaluated. In 28 cases (56%), pulmonary involvement was diagnosed; its type and severity was classified according to the specimen films of the ILO-U/C 1971 classification for pneumoconiosis. Serial observations in 27 patients spanning a period of one to 21 years have shown that the course of the disease in the lung is unpredictable. Rapid progress of fibrosis is, however, uncommon. Two radiological appearances in the thorax, which are not specific, but are found predominantly in scleroderma are: 1 an air oesophagram on the lateral thorax film (8 cases) and erosions of the upper rib margins (5 cases). The importance of radiological examination lies in the fact that it confirms the clinical diagnosis and that it may indicate the cause of an otherwise undiagnosed pulmonary fibrosis.

Studies on the population kinetics of the Walker carcinoma by autoradiography and pulse cytophotometry.

The proliferation parameters of the Walker carcinoma were estimated from both in vivo and in vitro measurements. tthe transplantable Walker carcinoma 256 was grown in male inbred BD1 rats. During exponential growth, 5--6 days after transplantation, a PLM curve was performed, yielding estimates of TC approximately equal to 18-0 hr, TS approximately equal to 6-4 hr, TG2+M approximately equal to 4-1 hr. With the double labelling technique in vitro under 2-2 atm oxygen we obtained: TC approximately equal to 18-2 hr, TS approximately equal to 8-2 hr, TG2+M approximately equal to 2-0 hr. From pulse cytophotometry DNA content histograms the fractions of cells in the cell cycle phases were calculated using a computer program: fG1 approximately equal to (47-6 +/- 1-1)%, fS approximately equal to (34-1 +/- 1-0)%, fG2+M approximately equal to (18-3 +/- 1-5)%. These fractions remained constant between the fifth and the twelfth day after transplantation. At that time the tumour growth had already slowed down appreciably. The growth fraction determined by repetitive labelling was 0.96 on the fifth and 0-93 on the seventh and eleventh day. The cell loss factor was phi approximately equal to 17% during exponential tumor growth and increased to about 100% between the tenth and twelfth day. The agreement of the cell kinetic data determined by autoradiography from solid tumours in vivo (PLM, continuous labelling) and autoradiography as well as pulse cytophotometry from in vitro experiments (excised material) was satisfactory.

[Diagnostic radiology for tumors for the small intestine(author's transl)].

The fractionated gastrointestinal tract presents technical problems which result in a large number of diagnostic errors in regard to tumors of the small intestine. Pharmacoradiologic processes and Sellink's sounding method deal successfully with these problems. The methods were described and their advantages for tumor diagnostics in the small intestine were stressed. The mesenteric angiography is important as an alternative and supplementary examination for small intestine diagnostics. Indications and interpretation possibilities were described.

[Diagnostic problems in a patient with progressive sclerodermia (author's transl)].

3 characteristic problems of progressive sclerodermia are discussed on the basis of one case: 1. The differential diagnosis of stenosis of the esophagus due either to the disease or to carcinoma, 2. in the presence of a round focus in a lung, the question of its connection with pulmonary fibrosis or bronchial carcinoma, 3. in rapidly increasing interstitial marking the distinction between increasing fibrosis of interstitial superimposed edema.

[Lymphographic alterations in carcinoma of the prostate (author's transl)].

Lymphography in carcinoma of the prostate has a characteristic pattern demonstrable in a rather early stage of the disease. This is due to a high rate of lymphogenous spread. In the present analysis the lymphographic data are recorded by computer system correlating the different types of alterations during the angiographic and retention phase. The alterations are evaluated separately in their significance for the prostate carcinoma.

[Radiologic signs in the colon in disease of the gallbladder (author's transl)].

Acute and chronic inflammation of the gallbladder may simulate pseudotumors of the right half of the colon; this may at times be obvious on straight films of the abdomen. Analysis of the changes of relief in contrast-examinations of the colon will lead to the correct diagnosis. Inflammatory reactions of the colon mostly appear near the mesocolic tenia. Cholecystocolic fistulae are mostly due to perforation of stones, only exceptionally to tumors. Adhesions appear to be the precondition for malignant infiltration and stoneperforation.

[The angiographic investigation of duodenal tumours (author's transl)].

The diagnosis and differential diagnosis of primary duodenal carcinomas by conventional radiological methods is difficult. Valuable information can be obtained by angiography, since primary duodenal carcinomas, unlike carcinomas of the papilla and pancreas, are characterised by the formation of pathological vessels arising from the duodenal branches of the gastro-duodenal artery. The integrity of the latter is an important differentiating feature. Exact localisation of the tumour is important in pre-operative assessment and diagnosis.
