A histochemical approach to the differentiation of lichen planus from lupus erythematosus.

A histochemical technic utilizing a maleimide-derived fluorochrome for the detection of disulfide bonds in subepidermal hyaline bodies is described. Lichen planus and the skin lesions of lupus erythematosus, which may have similar clinical, histologic, and immunofluorescent presentations, tend to demonstrate different patterns of reactivity with this reagent. This technic, then, may be used to distinguish between these two cutaneous disorders.

Dermatologic problems in athletes.

The skin diseases observed in athletes are common dermatologic problems that are related specifically to the individual skin type, hereditary factors, age, sex, environment, and sporting activity. Early recognition and treatment of these skin diseases permit the athlete to continue participation without disability or reduced performance.

Fiber implantation for pattern baldness. Review of complications in forty-one patients.

Forty-one patients who underwent one technic of fiber implantation for pattern baldness were studied. Complications were frequent and included rejection of fibers, infection, facial swelling, pain, pruritus, and scarring. In addition, patients incurred risks of carcinogenesis from deeply embedded bits of fiber and also loss of their own natural hair. Fiber implantation is an unsuccessful method of hair restoration, and its use has been discouraged by state and federal agencies.

Actinic reticuloid.

Actinic reticuloid is a polymorphous dermatosis resulting from a photosensitivity to long wavelength ultraviolet light and occasionally also to visible light, often with clinical and histological resemblance to lymphoma. We describe a patient who is the second American case to be reported with this disease and review the literature. Actinic reticuloid must be distinguished from mycosis fungoides, polymorphous light eruption, persistent light reaction, and contact dermatitis.
