Differential impact of abortion on adolescents and adults.

The purpose of this study was to compare adolescent and adult reactions to abortion. A sample of 252 women from 42 states was obtained from a national survey of organizations serving as support groups for women who have had negative reactions to abortion. The age analysis was run using t-tests. Results indicated that the adolescents were significantly more likely to be dissatisfied with the choice of abortion than were the older subjects, to have abortions later in the gestational period, to be dissatisfied with services at the time of the abortion, to feel forced by circumstances to have the abortion, to report being misinformed at the time of the abortion, and to report greater severity of psychological stress. The conclusions suggest that the adolescents' problems may be due to a combination of developmental limitations and the nature of counseling at the time of the abortion.

[Characteristics of alcohol withdrawal delirium in surgical patients and recommendations for treatment].

An alcohol withdrawal syndrome affects the patient in a 'vulnerable phase' either after an operation or posttraumatically. It can be shown pathophysiologically, that the symptoms are caused by a hyperactivity of the central sympathetic nervous system and a disbalance of the neurotransmitters. As for these complex symptoms, a multi-layered treatment is required. We report on our experiences with 23 patients who were treated in our intensive care unit. The treatment included a benzo-diazepine and a drug effecting central alpha 2-receptors. Only three of these patients had to be intubated or ventilated. Because of the induced bradycardia monitor observation was required in all cases. The patients could be wakened up at any time and thus were co-operative for basic care. One patient died of pulmonary embolism, a second patient died of cardiovascular failure as a consequence of cardiac insufficiency.

[Initial experience using the new Weill cementless threaded ring in acetabulum replacement].

First experiences with a new threaded ring for acetabulum arthroplasty developed by D. Weill are reported. These experiences are based on 59 implantations, whose clinical courses and complications are lined out. The Weill acetabular arthroplasty turned out to be a very valuable device for both primary and revision hip arthroplasty. It provides all advantages of cementless fixation. The fixation is gained by a selftapping thread on the outside of the titanium ring. Thus a very high primary stability is achieved. A bone grafting possibility in the fossa region is provided. The relative less tolerance of the Weill ring concerning improper orientation predisposing to dislocation is a disadvantage as we experienced.

[Modification of the rate of complications in the inflammatory adnexa process and pregnancy interruption].

On account of the case histories of the obstetrics and gynaecological klinic of the States Klinicum Berlin-Buch, the influencing of the complications rate by chronic adnex processes among the pregnant women who came for interruption, was examined. In 1974 and 1975 about 3118 interruptions with vacuum exhaustion and after-curettage, were carried out. During the stationary treatment, there were a total of 195 cases (6,2%) with complications, which later increased by 286 cases (19,1%), within 3 months after the interruption of their pregnancies. The complication's rates post interruption by patients with chronic recidive adnex-process are 27 cases (10,4%) only a little higher than those by the women with clear anamnesis (102 cases=8,2%). Therefore chronic adnex processes do not constitute contraindications for pregnancy interruptions.
