[Comments on a hitherto unknown ophthalmological monograph by Jacob Rüff (ca 1500-1558)].

Jacob Rüff challenges the representatives of academic medicine in a hitherto unknown and incomplete latin manuscript to oppose the decline in ophthalmology. This manuscript is the rough draft of an ophthalmological text-book of early modern times, never published but written at least 25 years before Bartisch's "Augentrost". It comprises traditional knowledge, the author's own discoveries, 85 prescriptions and 50 pen-and-ink drawings showing the anatomy of the eye and ophthalmo-surgical instruments.

[Limitations on dexterity in microsurgery].

The usable reach of microsurgical instruments employed in eye surgery can be recorded on a TABO diagram. This simple, rapid and versatile method can be used on models and in vivo. Its principal benefit is that it teaches beginners the physical limitations placed on their dexterity, but experienced surgeons will also find it useful when testing new instruments and practicing complicated maneuvers involving two or more hands. Familiarity with the reach of the individual instruments helps prevent complications due to improvisation, and fatigue caused by incorrect posture. The full potential of microsurgical methods can only be exploited if the conditions governing them are observed. One of these conditions is that physical proportions appear different under the microscope and therefore stricter rules apply than for operations carried out with the naked eye.
