The development of instrumentation for the dynamic measurement of changing head posture.

Cranial posture and its possible relationship to the morphology of the skull has been studied in some detail, as have the relationships between cranial posture and such functions as respiration and jaw movements. To date, cranial posture has been assessed mainly with techniques that give static interpretations of the angular relationships between intracranial and extracranial reference lines. The present project was undertaken to develop a system of instruments capable of the continuous measurement and recording of cranial posture for extended periods of time. A number of aspects of this system were tested. The results indicate that the experimental array of instruments measures head posture accurately over a defined range of cranial movement. This new technique should make it possible to measure cranial posture in a more dynamic and physiologic manner.

Adult

Surgical manipulation of the occlusal plane.

With combined surgical repositioning of the maxilla and the mandible, the occlusal plane is usually determined by the autorotation of the mandible. By manipulation of the cant of the maxillary occlusal plane, additional control of the esthetic result is obtained. In the approach discussed in this paper, prime attention is paid to repositioning of the maxilla into the most favorable situation by a deliberate rotation around points that are anterior in the face. The mandible is then surgically adjusted to secure a good occlusion. In this way, the cant of the occlusal plane becomes a priority in treatment planning, rather than simply an inevitable consequence of maxillomandibular surgery. The technique of treatment planning is discussed in detail, and three cases are presented to illustrate the concept. Of special importance is the enhancement of facial esthetics that is offered by the deliberate manipulation of the occlusal plane.

Adolescent

Hemifacial microsomia. A case report.

A case of hemifacial microsomia is presented. The mandible, temporomandibular joint, zygomatic arch and temporal region were reconstructed by means of skull bone grafts when the patient was 6 years old, a relatively early age. This corrective surgery has effectively restored normal mandibular function, and in so doing may encourage more acceptable development of the affected facial structures.

Spectrophotometric determination of cephapirin, a cephalosporin antibacterial.

A simple and specific method for the quantitative determination of cephapirin, a cephalosporin antibacterial, in finished bulk and dosage forms is reported. The method is based on reproducible degradation under controlled conditions to an unidentified species, which is measured spectrophotometrically at 375 nm. The procedure can be performed manually on a short series of samples in about 15 min or can be automated for large runs. Precursors and related substances show minimal interference. The coefficient of variation of the automated system is about 1% within days and 1.3% among days.

Autoanalysis

The cephalometric analysis of Cercopithecus aethiops.

A Steiner-based cephalometric study of 46 adult Vervet monkeys was undertaken using craniometric points as closely correlated to those in the human as possible. On tracings of each cephalogram 13 measurements were recorded. The results were statistically analysed. Whilst the monkey face does vary individually this variation is apparently much less than is that of the human face. It is possible that the positions of the monkey incisor crowns bear a relatively constant relationship to the soft tissue profile. The establishment of some cephalometric norms for the Vervet monkey may be useful for future growth studies.
