Bone and gallium scan findings in malignant fibrous histiocytoma. Case report with radiographic and pathologic correlation.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is the most common soft tissue malignancy in adults. The Ga-67 citrate scan findings of an extremity-located MFH, the most common location of this neoplasm, have never been published in English language journals to the best of the authors' knowledge. Ga-67 citrate and Tc-99m MDP scans of the thigh mass accurately depicted the tumor's local extent, including the presence of central ischemic necrosis within the tumor, and the absence of adjacent osseous involvement and distant metastases, as correlated with computed tomography, angiography, and pathologic examinations.

Clinical trials with one type of lithium pacemaker generator.

Cardiac Pacemakers, Inc. (CPI) solid-state, lithium-powered pulse generators were implanted in 100 patients by one surgeon in a twenty-eight-month period. Eleven CPI pacer generators were replaced, none due to pacer failure. Ninety-nine percent of the patients were followed for a total of 1,397.55 patient-months; 12 patients died, but no deaths appeared to be pacemaker related. The average age of the patients at the time of implantation was 72.8 years. If the warranty period of six years is achieved, the number of pacemaker generator changes required by many of the patients in this group could foreseeably be zero.

Treatment of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis with hyperbaric oxygen.

The use of hyperbaric oxygen for the treatment of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is reported. The pathophysiology, etiology and previous treatment reports are discussed, as are the advantages of hyperbaric oxygen therapy over normobaric oxygen therapy or surgery. The use of hyperbaric oxygen appears to represent a significant advance in the treatment of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis.

Universal cardiac valve holder.

A valve holder has been designed to facilitate the insertion of porcine cardiac valves. This holder allows a return to the operative technique established with the earlier generation of mechanical cardiac valves.

Pulmonary embolism: surgery in a hyperbaric chamber.

A 20-year-old man with a known history of thrombophlebitis experienced massive pulmonary embolism with hypoxia and shock. Embolectomy was performed with hyperbaric oxygenation for cardiopulmonary support. Ligation of the inferior vena cava was required postoperatively to prevent further embolism. Hyperbaric oxygenation is an effective method of cardiopulmonary support for pulmonary embolectomy.
