[Psychotherapy in atopic diseases].

Atopic diseases show many attributes and risk factors of psychosomatic diseases. The skin, on of our most essential organ of senses, is of considerable importance in the "dermatogenic state" of psychological and social development, as well as breathing. Children with atopic dermatitis and asthma bronchiale are very sensible and irritable. They divert their sick identity to the skin or to the lungs. Psychotherapy is therefore for many cases of atopic children and essential part of treatment, especially as a systemic therapy.

[Risk factors in problem children].

Results of a study on 2000 children an adolescents with behavioural and psychosomatic disorders, who were treated by the department of neuropsychiatry, Kinderspital Linz, are presented. After the formation of a new station for neuropsychiatry in child and adolescent age we constituted a interdisciplinary teamwork for ambulatory and stationary treatment. This team consists of psychologists, educators and specialized staff. All kinds of neuropsychiatric diseases are to treat, the catamnesis include their prenatal risk factors and all disturbances of development. We tried to correlate the preexistent risk factors with actual troubles and found that intervention would have been possible long before the disturbance in child was apparent (5, 3).

[Pneumothorax in the newborn (author's transl)].

47 cases of Pneumothorax (P) were encountered among 3679 consecutive patients of the neonatology unit of the Landes Kinderkrankenhaus Linz (= 1.3%). Of these 47 cases 38 occurred in artificially ventilated patients this amounts to 11.7% of all 325 ventilated newborn babies during the study period. Only 9 Pneumothoraces (= 0.24%) occurred spontaneously. Pneumothoraces in non ventilated patients were confined to the first few hours of life while the risk of pneumothorax is equally spread over the ventilation period in babies on respirators. Pneumothoraces which occurred in ventilated babies showed always tension signs while only 2 of the 9 spontaneously occurring pneumothoraces showed increased tensions. Transillumination of thorax was extremely helpful as bedside test for diagnosis.

[Transcutaneous measurements of pO2 (ptcO2) in sick newborn babies (author's transl)].

PaO2 as well as transcutaneous pO2 (ptcO2) was measured simultaneously for 132 times in 34 sick newborns. PtcO2 data were obtained by the KONTRON 5300 Monitor, its electrode heated to 44 centigrades. The correlation coefficient "r" was rated at 0.98. The introduction of the ptcO2 method into routine clinical usage markedly enhanced efficiency and safety of oxygen treatment of sick newborns. However superficial burning of the skin at the measuring site might occur if the electrode is attached more than 6 hours.
