Evaluation of psychopathological factors and origins of suicides committed by soldiers, 1989 to 1998.

Research and scientific observations indicate that, in the armed forces, some individuals tend to experience strong feelings of solitude and harm and do not always have opportunities to receive help. The inability to solve and successfully cope with problems may lead to adaptive difficulties and provoke reckless reactions, including suicide attempts. The aim of this project was a retrospective analysis of the origins and factors leading to successful suicide attempts undertaken by soldiers from 1989 to 1998, with special emphasis on psychopathological determinants. The study examined all cases of successful suicides in the Polish Armed Forces: 163 professional soldiers (military service was their job) and 274 privates (obligatory military service group). The most common reason for suicides in the analyzed group was the combination of psychiatric disorders and psychosocial factors. Among privates, most of the suicides occurred during the first 12 months of service, whereas professional soldiers committed most suicides between their 11th and 15th years of service. The results suggest the urgent introduction of a suicide prevention program.

[Subjective evaluation of the effect of meteorological factors on the psychophysical status of workers of a large industrial plant].

The authors have conducted an epidemiological inquiry in a randomly selected group of 171 workers of a large refining and petrochemical plant. The investigation demonstrated a high meteorotropic sensitivity varying with the employment length, higher in women and those treated for various psychic and somatic disturbances. High meteorotropic sensitivity of refinery plant workers made the authors raise the hypothesis of the effect of chemical working environment pollution upon the physiological functions of the organism.

[Usefulness of determining the conduction of sensory nerve fibers in the diagnosis of vibration disease].

Thirty two metallurgical industry workers exposed to vibration (I group) and nine workers of the same industrial plant but unexposed to vibration (II group) underwent the following tests: electromyography--abductor dig. V, and abductor pollicis brevis, conductability of sensory fibers n. medianus and ulnaris, conductability of motoric fibers of n. ulnaris. In the third, control, group twenty five men had conductability norms determined. The results have been statistically analysed. Electromyography appeared more useful for the diagnosis of early symptoms of the vibration disease than for nerves conductability tests. The tests of sensory nerves conductability exhibit frequent deviations in the II group workers. Positive correlation was found between electromyography and nerves conductability findings.

[The value hierarchy of outpatients with paranoid schizophrenia].

The aim of this work was to describe the value hierarchy in paranoid schizophrenia and to compare it with healthy controls. 70 outpatients (35 males and 35 females) aged 38-46 and 70 matched healthy persons were examined using the Polish adaptation of "Value Survey". It was found out that there are significant differences and that the most important of them were safeness, social, moral, interpersonal and allocentric values; less important were personal, competence, individual and egocentric values.

[The needs structure of outpatients with paranoid schizophrenia].

The aim of this work was to describe the needs structure in paranoid schizophrenia and to compare it with healthy controls. 70 outpatients (35 males and 35 females) aged 38-46 and 70 matched healthy persons were examined using the Polish adaptations of "Adjective Check List" and "Stern Activities Index". It was found out that the greatest differences and intensity took place for harmavoidance, blamavoidance, infavoidance (safeness), need for succorance, order, deference and abasement; the lowest level was found out for need for changes, aggressiveness, exhibition and domination.
