Approximately 80% of the genome of feline panleukopenia virus was cloned into pBR322. This DNA included the transcription unit for the major viral mRNA species. The nucleotide sequence of the cloned portion of the genome was determined. Comparison of the feline panleukopenia virus sequence with the sequences of the parvoviruses minute virus of mice and H-1 revealed considerable homology between the three viruses on both the nucleic acid and protein levels. Based on this homology, a model for the generation of the two size classes of viral structural proteins (VP1 and VP2') is proposed.
The results of an FDI questionnaire-based survey involving dentists from five countries reporting on 507 implants were compared with those of similar surveys on implantations conducted by the American Dental Association in 1977 and subsequent years. There were questions on retention time, materials used and types of implants; of the 1024 recorded implants, the loss rate was calculated at 16.5 per cent. This rate was compared with those found in objective follow-up investigations reported in the literature (total 695 implants) and a realistic loss rate of approximately 16 per cent, was confirmed.

The legal principles involved with patient information were described from a medicolegal point of view, and practical examples (lingual anesthesia, mandibular anesthesia, rsults of detaching the labial frenum, pulpal devitalization under bridges, damage claims for incorrect treatment) were presented. The court decisions were discussed.
Extraoral fistulas, whether primary or as the residue of an abscess, have different causes. According to case reports in the literature and from clinical experience the dentogenous cause is the more frequent. For this reason a possible tooth involvement should be ruled out before therapy, loss of dental pulp of various origin and periodontal diseases should be excluded, otherwise the treatment must begin with the cause, after which further intervention is usually superfluous.

In 10 dogs, lung infarction of the right middle and of the left inferior lobe was obtained experimentally. 1 h after operation, 2.0 mCi 99mtechnetium-tetracycline was given intravenously. 5 h after injection, a maximum of accumulation in the infarcted tissue was detected. Conventional perfusion scintigrams were done by injecting 0.2 mCi of 131iodine-albumin particles. Correspondingly, a perfusion reduction in the infarcted area was seen by this technique. This method described seems promising for clinical use for the detection of lung infarction. Clinical studies in this field are in progress.
Patients' complaints relating to disorders of the temporomandibular joint appear to be becoming more frequent and to be occurring in younger age groups. In many cases no organic cause affecting the joint or the masticatory system can be identified as the sole cause of the symptoms. An investigation was therefore undertaken to determine whether psychological causes might also be implicated. Two questionnaires were used to establish a complete picture of patients from a number of countries who suffered from disorders of the temporomandibular joint. The first questionnaire sought particulars of the dental condition, family status, type of education, satisfaction with job and pay etc. The second was a personality questionnaire which had originally been prepared for the Olympic Games in Munich. Although the extensive data collected has not yet been fully evaluated it is clear that in addition to the well established dental causes such as shortened dental arches, deep overbite and cuspal interferences, a psychosomatic element is superimposed in many cases. It is hoped to develop a means by which those whose symptoms require a psychotherapeutic approach, either alone or in conjunction with dental treatment, can be identified.
After the chloroform extraction of drugs from the serum the extracts are vaporized. The remaining residues are solved with diluted NaOH or HCl and the solutions are measured spectrophotometrically. This approach gives the possibility of a simultaneous qualitative and quantitative analysis. The results help, to make quickly diagnostic and therapeutic decisions.
The dentist bears a particularly great responsibility with regard to the early detection of cancer of the oral cavity, since only early detection provides the greatest prospect of a cure. A description is therefore given of the features of the oral mucous membrane on which the differential diagnosis of 'carcinoma of the oral cavity' must in particular be made. The author then sets out an examination procedure which every dentist should follow before any treatment is given; this will also make it possible to detect those carcinomas of which the patient himself is not yet aware.
The healing of an extraction wound is taken as starting-point, and complications and their avoidance are discussed insofar as they affect the shape of the alveolar process. Surgical methods of treating cysts and other tumours are reviewed, and it is shown how these may be carried out with little damage to the form of the denture-base. Every dentist should bear in mind subsequent prosthetic care whenever undertaking surgery of the oral cavity.
