The posterior horn and collateral trigone of the lateral ventricle of the monkey brain (Macaca speziosa). A scanning electron microscopic study.

The posterior horn of the lateral ventricle in the monkey brain varies in size in different individuals. In this part of the ventricle, the ependymal cells bear cilia, microvilli, microblebs and supraependymal, axon-like cell processes. Only slight differences are seen in the different parts of the posterior horn: The roof has densely packed cilia and microvilli. Supraependymal axons are almost absent. The lateral wall has axons which are irregularly arranged. Subependymal vessels are partly covered by polygonal ependymal cells. The collateral trigone has some regions with densely packed cilia and some with widely spaced cilia. The regions with widely spaced cilia have polygonal cells whose surfaces differ in shape and are surrounded by a border of microvilli. The meshwork of supraependymal axons is wide-spread on polygonal cells. The medial wall shows no regional differences. Though larger areas are free of supraependymal cell processes, all ependymal structures (cilia, microvilli, microblebs) are present. In the posterior horn of only two animals were these larger spherical protrusions present which could be the result of a secretory process.

[The ependyma of the lateral ventricle in Acanthodactylus pardalis (Reptilia, Lacertidae)].

Within the lateral ventricles of the brain of Acanthodactylus pardalis, different zones of ependymal cells are recognizable through their fluctuating changes from one into the other. The frontal pole of the hemisphere shows a rather homogeneous ependyma whose cells are laying together. Cell fibers are not visible. Farther caudally, the ventricular wall is subject to some alterations; there are more long-shaped cell nuclei. The ventricular sulci are areas of different ependymal structures. The sulcus terminalis represents a zone of dense-laying cells, whose nuclei possess in several regions more round or more elongated forms. An apical cytoplasmatic border and cilia are often clearly built out. The sulcus lateralis and the sulcus septo-archipallialis have a dense cell layer. The region below the medial cortex, near the sulcus septo-archipallialis, shows tanycytes with long basal fibers. The ependyma of the dorsal striatum shows dorsally as well as laterally, at the ventricle, areas with loosely arranged cells. The orientation of the cell nuclei to the ventricular surface is variable, especially at the ventricular wall of the septum and the opposite side of the striatum, where cell nuclei are to be found whose axis lays no more vertical but parallel to the ventricular surface.

[The nucleus of the posterior pallial commissure in Lacerta sicula (Rafinesque) and its ontogenetic connection to the thalamus].

The nucleus of the posterior pallial commissure of Lacerta sicula originates between the 11th and 18day of incubation. During this time, the developing nucleus shows a distinct and wellformed cellular connection with the rostral, dorsally lying ventral thalamus. The whole connecting nuclear mass lies close to the matrix of the diencephalic and telencephalic ventricle and the connecting foramen interventriculare. It is evident that cells which originate from the the ventral thalamus are possibly delivered to the telencephalic nucleus of the posterior pallial commissure. The cellular connection between thalamus and hemisphere ruptures between the 18th and 19th day of incubation as a result of growth displacement and is no longer visible in later stages.

[Sex differences in illness behavior of patients in a psychotherapeutic outpatient clinic].

According to the current literature a study with patients of a psychotherapeutic ambulance of an University hospital was conducted to determine whether sex differences in illness behaviour exist in this special population. The results show that women more than men see their symptoms as an expression of a psychic disturbance. Furthermore they seem to make use of the resources of the lay referral system more intensively and with a different setting of an objective than men. Although women obviously do have less reservations against consulting a helping facility it takes more time comparatively till they contact the first professional helper.
