Nineteen subjects with retinal strokes of different degrees of severity (amaurosis fugax, occlusion of individual retinal arteries or of the central retinal artery) were examined by continuous-wave Doppler sonography. Evaluation of periorbital Doppler flow and direct examination of the major neck vessels were performed. Twelve subjects presented with homolateral arteriosclerotic lesions at the carotid bifurcation. The ultrasonographic findings were confirmed by carotid arteriography. High-grade stenosis or occlusion of the internal carotid artery were found in approximately 50% of the patients; the remainder turned out to have low-grade stenoses or nonstenosing plaques. These findings emphasize the role of emboli from the major neck arteries in the pathogenesis of retinal and cerebral insults. Hemodynamic effects seem to be of minor significance. Continuous-wave Doppler sonography is a completely non invasive, but nevertheless reliable method for the detection of clinically relevant carotid lesions. Especially patients suffering from retinal insults should be examined by Doppler sonography, since they are at high risk for further cerebral stroke.

Artificially induced increases in intraocular pressure slow the influx of dye during fluorescein angiography sufficiently to permit a sparation in time of the filling of the retina and the choroidea. During the filling of the choroidea segmental filling patterns appear in the form of lobules: the size of these wes determined. Interarterial anastomoses between ciliar arteries were also demonstrated. The clarity of the photographs was enhanced by computer-assisted image evaluation.

Vascular corrosion casts of the rabbit eye vessels were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Compared with light micrescopy, this method provides great depth of field and better contrast. Thus the pictures are more informative and documentation is easier. The high resolving power of scanning electron microscopy of suitable vascular casts allows the study of structures of the inner vessel wall. Such information could not be retrieved from these replicas until now.

The effect of i.v. administered clonidine on the blood flow through different tissues was investigated in six rabbits which had been anaesthetized with NembutalR. Six additional animals served as controls and received an equal quantity of a physiological sodium chloride solution. The blood flow was determined by means of radioactively labelled microspheres just before as well as 15, 30 and 45 min after the administration of the drug or the placebo respectively. In most of the investigated tissues a considerable decrease in blood flow was observed 15 min after the injection of clonidine, whereas no effect was to be seen after administration of sodium chloride. For the first time after 30 min, and even more after 45 min the blood flow diminished as well in the control group. The flow-decreasing effect of clonidine occured in lung, skin, choroid, the small intestine, the triceps muscle, the ciliary body, iris, and white matter, whereas the opposite reaction was observed in liver (hepatic artery), retina and the optic nerve.
