Speculation contrasting experiences of World War II and U.S. servicemen of the Vietnam era in Southeast Asia.

Clinical experience with veterans leads to the speculation that there was deliberate promotion of drug use during the Vietnam War which may account for the markedly greater drug addiction evident in comparing Vietnam and World War II veterans. Returning home within a few days of combat rather than slowly by sea may have removed an opportunity to discuss and reflect on war experiences.

Attitudes of potential employers toward drug abuse.

Administrators of engineering, fiscal, and personnel services were surveyed for attitudes toward drug abuse. Responses were highly correlated despite significant differences among groups in age, education, and personal acquaintance with drug abusers. They applied more stringent preemployment requirements to drug abusers than alcoholics, and consequences of these requirements in a troubled economic climate were considered. Attitudes of nontreatment administrators were correlated to a lesser degree with earlier responses by psychology administrators. Groups frequently endorsed the concept of special hospitals for abusers and seldom endorsed the use of jails and the court system unless distribution or related criminal activity was involved.

An exploratory study of state-trait anxiety as a function of automated relaxation training, desired changes and drinking behavior.

Fifty-two VA domiciliary residents were given four sessions of tape-recorded relaxation training in small groups. The State-Trait Anxiety Scale was administered before the first and last training sessions. The experimental group's mean state anxiety decreased from Test I to Test II, but a control group's mean increased (p less than .025). Both groups decreased in trait anxiety over time (p less than .001). A significant effect within the experimental group was that 9 residents with disciplinary problems due to intoxication during the training period increased in mean state anxiety, while the remainder of the group decreased. Experimental Ss who initially desired many trait changes decreased mean trait anxiety more from Test I to Test II than did the rest of the experimental group (p less than .025).

Attitudes of psychologists toward drug abusers.

This survey of 827 psychologists' and trainees' attitudes toward drug abusers includes definitions of drug abuse, causes, recommended treat, treatment environments, and personal commitment to treating abusers. The use of prison and courts is contrasted with hospitals, and a subgroup's attitudes are contrasted with previously surveyed attitudes toward alcoholics. Recommended financial benefits and knowledge of laboratory tests to detect drug abuse also are assessed. Differences among three groups of psychologists and their respective response biases are discussed. Various elements of the profession have potential contributions to make to this serious social problem.
