The Molteno implant is a well recognised method of treating end-stage secondary glaucoma. Several variations of the technique have been described in the literature, but few reports of long-term studies have been published. This paper reports the results of a series of patients followed for two to six years. Indications for the procedure and results are put forward.

Outpatient treatment of cancer patients, often medically and psychologically sound, results in great savings for insurers but increased out-of-pocket expenses to patients. If insurers were to reimburse for nonmedical out-of-pocket costs as well as medical, this disincentive to deinstitutionalization would be removed.

An immobilized film of an aqueous bicarbonate-carbonate solution was developed which was 4100 times more permeable to carbon dioxide than to oxygen. The carbon dioxide transport was reaction-rate limited, and thus it could be increased by addition to the film of catalysts for the hydrolysis of carbon dioxide.
