BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: The study aim was to summarize the authors' experience in corrective surgery of Ebstein's anomaly. METHODS: A total of 139 patients operated on between June 1980 and January 2000 was studied retrospectively. Among these patients, 111 underwent atrialized ventricle plication, tricuspid valve reconstruction and DeVega tricuspid annuloplasty, 27 underwent tricuspid valve replacement, and one patient with right ventricular hypoplasia underwent an additional total cavopulmonary connection. RESULTS: Overall, there were 12 operative deaths (mortality rate 8.6%); however, between 1990 and 2000, the mortality rate was 3.3%. Among the reconstruction patients, 10 cases were reoperated on for valve replacement, and all survived. CONCLUSION: Surgery for Ebstein's anomaly should be defined according to the pathologic/anatomic features of the condition. Tricuspid valve reconstruction should be performed in the mild condition; in medium A type, reconstruction should be performed, while for medium B type, reconstruction or valve replacement should be selected, albeit with caution. Valve replacement should be performed in the severe conditions.
A new species of Discinites is described from the Late Permian Upper Shihhotse Formation of the Weibei Coalfield, Shaanxi Province, China. D. hanchengensis sp. nov. has decurrent and disk-like sporophylls with deep-toothed apices, elliptical sporangia and rectangular epidermal cells. The spores are generally of the Calamospora type. The megaspores and microspores are 300-380 and 45-90µm in diameter, respectively. The microspores are similar in size to those of all other species of Discinites that contain Calamospora, but the megaspores are remarkably smaller. The new species represents the first record of Discinites with Calamospora from China and from the Cathaysian flora. Finally, we summarize the associated foliages of Discinites in the Cathaysian flora and find that they are all markedly different from those found in the Euramerican flora.
The study was conducted to provide reference values of anthropometry and dietary intakes of elderly Chinese aged greater than or equal to 70 years and to investigate differences between urban and rural groups. A total of 441 subjects comprising 260 urban elderly (126 men and 134 women) and 181 rural elderly (83 men and 98 women) participated in the anthropometric study. One hundred subjects (50 men and 50 women) from both urban and rural locations were selected randomly from the anthropometric cohort for dietary survey using the method of diet recall. For both men and women, the urban elderly had significantly higher intakes of protein, fat, calcium, iron, retinol, thiamin, riboflavin and nicotinic acid than did the rural elderly. Significant sexual differences were also observed: men had higher intakes of total energy and three macronutrients than women. Both regional and sexual differences in anthropometry (but not blood pressure) seemed to be consistent with the results of the dietary survey. Positive correlations were found between systolic blood pressure and the ratio waist:hip circumference for both men and women. As a marker of adipose tissue distribution, it seemed that this ratio was more predictive of high blood pressure than body-weight.

Deprotection peak profiles have been determined as a measure of internal aggregation during Fmoc-polyamide continuous flow solid phase synthesis. The results have been correlated with amino-acid structure and discussed in terms of minimising aggregation during synthesis.
