Observation on drug resistance of Trypanosoma (Nannomonas) congolense and Trypanosoma (Duttonella) vivax in cattle at a feedlot in the Northern Ivory Coast.

Studies carried out on feedlot cattle show Berenil at 7 mg/kg to be the treatment of choice in trypanosomiasis although repeated doses may be necessary. Resistant strains of Trypanosoma (Duttonella) vivax and Trypanosomas (Nannomonas) congolense survived dosages of between 0.5 mg/kg and 1.0 mg/kg of Trypamidium and were cross resistant to Homidium bromide.

[Testing of cementless stepped-stem prosthetic devices replacing the hip shoulder joint of the dog. Comparison of two animal models (author's transl)].

In 6 dogs the hip joint was experimentally replaced using a ceramic stepped-stem prosthetic device implanted in the thigh bone. In six other dogs V4A steel stepped-stem prosthetic devices inserted in the arm bone was used for replacing shoulder joint. The six devices replacing the shoulder joint healed up without complications and proved to be mechanically stable. From six devices replacing the hip joint only one was successful; the remaining five implants did not heal up due to fractures of the stem, loosening in the thigh bone and osteomyelitis. We suggest that these different results are based not on the different material, but on the different conditions characteristic for each implantation sites. The devices implanted in the arm bone of the dog, corresponding to the conditions in man, were stressed mainly by pressure and pull. In such conditions the newly formed bone tissue anchoring in the steps on the stem stabilized the device. On the other hand, the biomechanical load on the hip joint replacing device in the dog is represented mainly by rotation at stress, for which the devices are not conceived. The stepped profile of the stem can not work; it twists in the thigh bone and remains unstable causing consequences such as fractures, osteomyelitis and loosening. For experimental testing of bone and joint replacing prosthetic devices of cementless anchoring systems replacing human hip joint and thigh bone we recommend the shoulder joint of the dog instead of hip joint, because of the comparable biomechanics.

Enzymatic composition of canine leg lymph.

In an experimental study employing anaesthetised dogs, lymph from the deep lymphatic system in a hind leg was sampled at 15-min intervals. Lymph and corresponding plasma samples were analysed for ten different enzymes and for protein. In a control group a preliminary period of 15-min lymph collections was followed by 1 h of 'rest' (no passive movement of leg) and restoration of the lymph flow for another 2 h. In a hypoxic group during the 1 h of 'rest' the blood supply of a hind limb was interrupted to cause an increase of enzyme release. Neither lymphatic enzyme activity nor lymphatic transport of enzymes was increased by hypoxia. Enzyme activities in plasma did not show any elevation either. From lymph plasma quotients of enzymes and protein it is deduced that cellular enzymes have to be transported into the intravascular space by lymph flow and scarcely via a direct entry across capillaries.

Urethral plug--a new secondary male sex characteristic in rat and other rodents.

The plug is an eosinophilic mass, partly homogenous and partly porous, filling the proximal urethra in rats and occasionally extending into the bladder. Its average weight in 131 adult rats was 0.063 g. These plugs are normally present in the urethra of adult male rats, and this seems to be the case for all laboratory Muridae and Cavidae. The absence of a plug in an adult male may be a sign of abnormality associated with failing health. There is an interesting similarity between the amino acid composition of the content of seminal vesicles, that of the urethral plug, and that of the copulatory vaginal plug in female rodents.

Effect of transient hypoxia in skeletal muscle on enzyme activities in lymph and plasma.

The effect of hypoxia lasting one hour on the hind leg muscle of anaesthetised dogs was investigated. Ten enzyme activities in plasma and leg lymph, and the lymphatic transport of these enzymes were investigated. Enzymes with high activity in muscle, like creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase and adenylate kinase only show an increase in the plasma, if lymph--propulsed by passive motion of the hind leg--can reach the intravascular space. This effect is independent of transient hypoxia. Depending on the level of enzyme activity in the muscle, the activity in leg lymph is up to 6-fold higher than in plasma. Enzymes from muscle have to be transported into the blood by lymph flow and not via a direct interstitial-venous entry. The results are discussed especially with respect to enzyme activity changes in plasma during physical exercise.

On the immobilization of hartebeest and kob in Upper Volta.

24 hartebeests (Alcelaphus buselaphus major), one waterbuck (Kobus defassa) and 16 kobs (Kobus kob) were immobilized during field work in Upper Volta. The use of the newly developed piperidine derivative R 33799 at weight treated dosage levels can be strongly recommended for the immobilisation of hartebeest. In this species the drug produces a sufficient deep analgesia within a reasonable short period for all handling purposes. It is safe, has a wide therapeutic index, can be used in syringes of not more than 1 ml capacity and is quickly reversed by the antidote (nalorphine hydrobromide). No fatalities occurred. The limited number of kobs immobilized did not allow final conclusions to be drawn on the compatibility of the drug for this game species unless the central nervous side effects as described can be explained better and overcome. Further investigation should be undertaken to study the reaction of kob to lower dosages of R 33799 and other combinations of this analgesic with other neuroleptics. Nalorphine hydrobromide proved to be a useful antidote in hartebeest, but less effective in kob.

Lymphatic transport of cellular enzymes from muscle into the intravascular compartment.

In an experimental study, employing anaesthetized dogs, it was investigated whether cellular enzymes from peripheral skeletal muscle get into the circulating blood by diffusion across capillary membranes or by lymphatic transport. In the experimental group 1, the animals were anaesthetized only. The plasma activities of the four enzymes measured--lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, creatine kinase--did not show any mentionable change during a time period of 6 h. In group 2 one hind limb of each animal was moved passively for 1 h. Alanine aminotransferase remained unchanged in plasma, the activities of the three other enzymes increased significantly. In group 3 one hind limb was made hypoxic by clamping the femoral blood vessels for 1 h. No activity changes were observed. When the period of hypoxia was followed by a 1-hour period of passive movement in group 4, the alterations in plasma activities were almost identical to those observed in group 2. In group 5 the experimental procedure was as in group 4, in addition the lymph from the thoracic duct was quantitatively withdrawn. The enzyme activities in plasma revealed a tendency to decrease rather than increase. Lymph flow increased significantly as well as the lymphatic activities of those enzymes which have high intracellular activities in muscle. The results prove, that enzymes from muscle are transported from the interstitial into the intravascular compartment mainly by lymphatic transport. Indications were found that the interruption of blood flow in one hind limb did not result in an enzyme release from muscle cells. It is discussed how changes in lymph flow, occurring during physical exercise for example, affect enzyme activities in plasma.

[Creation of reaction-less pseudoarthrosis on the ulna of the dog (author's transl)].

The model situation of so called "avital, avascular" pseudoarthrosis was surgiclly induced in 25 beagle dogs using defectosteotomy and heat-necrotization of both ulna bones. The clinical evolution was examined weekly using roentgengraphy and each 4th week by scintigraphy. According to roentgen pictures three stages can be identified: 1. Reaction of the bone on surgical trauma (until 4th week). 2. Sequestration or asepticosteolysis (until 18th week). 3. Consolidation of the pseudoarthrosis model-situation (after 18th week). Scintigraphy revealed by the continuing so called "avital" pseudoarthrosis an enhanced metabolism activity at the tips of both bone fragments. The cause for these active metabolic processes evoking enhanced activity on both fragment ends during scintigraphy wich is not demonstrable with roentgen device are the pulling, pushing and tensile strengths originating from a connective-tissue-cord existing between them. The results of scintigraphy lead us to use the term "reaction-less pseudoarthrosis" instead of "avascular" or "avital" for this model of pseudoarthrosis.

[Transjugular puncture of the portal vein. Portography and selective phlebography of abdominal organs. An experimental study in dogs (author's transl)].

Transjugular transhepatic portography is a new method for catheterising the portal vein and its tributaries. In order to gather experience of the method before applying it clinically, the transvenous approach was studied in six dogs. Transjugular portography has the following advantages as compared with umbilical vein catheterization and percutaneous, transhepatic portal vein catherterisation: 1. Because of the relative positions of the jugular veins, vena cava and portal vein, manipulation of the catheter for selective phlebography is simpler. 2. There is no risk of a haemoperitoneum or bile peritonitis if a correct technique is used since the liver capsule remains intact. 3. In the presence of portal hypertension, it may be possible in future to create an intrahepatic portocaval shunt by the transjugular approach without a major operation. Sclerosis of oesophageal varices is possible, as it is with the other procedures.
