[Studies on the reappearing of a bacterial flora in drinking water after ozonization (author's transl)].

The use of ozone as a drinking water disinfectant is increasing. As opposed to the commonly used chlorine the disinfecting activity of ozone cannot be sustained in the water during the distribution process, and as a result recontamination and bacterial growth are not adequately under control. Information about the safety margins of this disinfecting procedure was obtained in experiments simulating the working conditions of a water plant including supply system. After treatment with 1.5 mg O3/1 water, specimens with no detectable remanent ozone were found to remain sterile for at least one month. However, during the passage of a pipeline of 1200 m length recontamination with and considerable growth of microorganisms was observed. After inoculating water sterilized by ozone with a normal population of water bacteria, the bacterial growth was more pronounced than in similar experiments with heat-sterilized water of the same origin. This may be an indication that the breakdown products of organic water contaminants (e.g. humic acid) - resulting from the ozone treatment - are better nutrients for the water bacteria than the original organic substances themselves.

[On the problem of passive smoking (author's transl)].

There is no evidence to date that passive smoking leads in the long run to typical smokers' diseases or to an increased health risk in an average healthy person. There are no plausible reasons to justify the assumption that such disturbances develop in passive smokers in the short term. Exposure to tobacco smoke can, under unfavourable conditions, lead to temporary irritation and impair the feeling of well-being which some persons may experience as a considerable nuisance. There are groups of persons of increased sensitivity and predisposition towards health risks, such as asthmatics and small children. These persons should not be exposed to tobacco smoke. There is the problem of individually determined smell interference by tobacco smoke. Admittedly, numerous questions await still an answer, but there is enough time to clarify them at leisure since passive smoking entails no acute danger of poisoning (cf. Lit. No. 15). In this field the most important task is to study in detail the problem of nuisance caused by smoking, with regard to both the prevailing law and to the demands of air hygiene. A detailed comment on the verdict passed by the Administrative Court of Schleswig closes with the phrase: "The prevention of the detrimental effects to health caused by tobacco smoke constitutes a preeminent task for the public health service and health policy".

1975 Yant Memorial Lecture New aspects on dust and pneumoconiosis research.

This lecture deals with pneumoconiosis, in particular with fibrotic tissue reactions caused by SiO2 and asbestos dusts in the lungs. The term "fine dusts" is defined in connection with the setting up of MAC-values. The aerodynamical diameter of particle shaped and fibrifom dust is set forth. Results of the fundamental research with SiO2, Coal mine and asbestos dusts in animal and cell experiments are explained.

The biological effect of asbestos and asbestos cement products.

The importance of the physical characteristics, rather than the chemical composition of fibres, in relation to their alveolar deposition and biological effects is stressed. For alveolar deposition in the aerodynamic properties--depending on the fibres diameter--are decisive, whereas in the interaction between macrophages and fibres, fibre length is the decisive factor for cytotoxicity. Probably fibre length could, inter alia, be responsible for a pathogenic effect around the lung tissue. The results from measurements of the cytotoxicity of the UICC standard asbestos dusts and pure cement dust are presented and discussed.
