Late complications after open carpal tunnel decompression.

66 patients (89 hands) were assessed at least 10 months after open carpal tunnel decompression. Tender scars were found in 19% of the hands and 4% were affected by pillar pain. Grip strength was reduced in more than half of the operated hands. Hypo- and anaesthesia in the scar area were affecting 7% but were not considered disabling. In 18% of the cases there was incomplete relief of primary symptoms.

Different modes of dampening influence from baroreceptors are determined by the functional organization of the NTS neuronal network.

Simultaneous recordings of several neurones of the first relay station of baroreceptor afferents show that its general activity-dampening influence is realized via the common brainstem system (CBS) which itself controls the processing on the neurones of the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS). This feedback system maintains the degree of activity which is necessary for the ongoing behaviour as long as it fits to the environmental situation. The output of the NTS is determined partly by the CBS, partly by the properties of the peripheral afferent input, partly by the dynamic functional organization of the local circuits and partly by influences from other brain areas.

Computed tomography in CNS tuberculosis.

Computed tomography (CT) was performed in 14 cases of tuberculous meningitis (TBM), 12 of which were examined during the acute phase of the disease. CT findings in these cases included internal hydrocephalus (6/12), internal combined with external hydrocephalus (2/12), focal lesions consistent with localized encephalitis (3/12), diffuse brain edema (1/12), and middle cerebral artery infarction (1/12). In comparison to 32 cases of nonspecific bacterial meningitis, internal hydrocephalus was found significantly more often in TBM than in nonspecific meningitis (p less than 0.01) making CT an additional tool for the differentiation of these conditions in doubtful cases. In addition, CT features of 2 cases of cerebral tuberculoma are presented.

[Anaerobic bacterial meningitis with multiple brain abscesses].

The improvement of bacteriological techniques for isolation and identification of anaerobes has led to an increased interest in anaerobic infections. However, anaerobes have only rarely been found in cases of purulent meningitis, representing less than 1 percent of all isolated pathogens. We observed anaerobic meningitis in a patient suffering from multiple lung abscesses from which anaerobic bacteria spread to the brain, causing formation of anaerobic brain abscesses and consecutive meningitis. Microbiological examinations for anaerobes should be performed in those cases of meningitis in which purulent infections of other organs with known or suspected anaerobic etiology are present or in which a traumatic lesion of the subarachnoid space has preceded the development of meningitis.

Multiple scattering distributions for therapeutic pion beams.

Accurate treatment planning for therapeutic beams of negative pions requires knowledge of the multiple scattering of pions in biologically relevant materials. Complete spatial and angular scattering distributions have been measured for pions in scatterers of carbon, water and calcium. Measurements were made for targets varying in thickness from 0.5 to 21 g cm-2 and for pions with ranges of approximately 12 and 20 g cm-2. An array of scintillators, multiwire drift and multiwire proportional chambers was used to record the scattering of individual particles. These data are compared with the results of Molière scattering theory. The implications for pion treatment planning are discussed.
