[The Russian gene pool. Frequency of genetic markers].

Frequency distribution of several genetic markers was studied in ethnic Russians from the Moscow, Bryansk, Ryazan', Kostroma, Novgorod, Arkhangel'sk, and Sverdlovsk oblasts and Udmurtiya. Systems AB0, RH, HP, TF, GC, PI, C'3, ACP1, PGM1, ESD, GLO1, 6PGD, and AK were analyzed in most samples. New data on informative polymorphic genetic loci showed that the Russian gene pool mostly displays Caucasoid features. In addition, Y-chromosomal short tandem repeats (STRs) DYS19, DYS390, and YCAII were analyzed in the Russian samples. STRs of the chromosome are particularly valuable for elucidating ethnogenetic processes in Eastern Europe. Frequency distributions of the Y-chromosomal markers in Russians were intermediate between those of West European populations and eastern Finno-Ugric ethnoses of the Volga region. A marked longitudinal gradient was revealed for frequencies of several molecular markers.

Climate-dependent genetic variation of alpha-2HS-glycoprotein.

We studied the possible effects of climatic factors on the world distribution of alleles determining alpha 2-HS-glycoprotein (AHSG) phenotypes in human populations. New data on AHSG polymorphism in certain ethnic groups of Russia are presented. All available data on the distribution of AHSG gene frequencies in the world (number of populations n = 51) were used to analyze possible correlations between AHSG*2 allele frequencies and seven climatic-geographic parameters. A strong positive correlation was found between AHSG*2 allele frequency and geographic latitude of territories inhabited by the study populations (r = 0.814). The dependence of the AHSG*2 allele distribution in the world on the intensity of ultraviolet radiation (400-315 nm) was estimated at r = -0.826. Such climatic characteristics as the total amount of insolation and the average annual temperature proved to make equal contributions to variation in AHSG*2 allele frequency (r = -0.683 and -0.658, respectively). A computer cartographic model of the AHSG*2 allele distribution in the Old World populations of the Northern Hemisphere was constructed.

Serum protein polymorphisms in seven populations from Middle Eastern and Eastern Europe.

Serum specimens from 1385 unrelated males and females from seven Middle East and East European sample surveys (Prague, Olomouc, Krakow, Poznan, Szeged, Moscow, and Jekaterinburg) have been typed for seven polymorphic serum protein polymorphisms (GC, TF, PLG, PI, A2HS, F13B, and ITI). The distributions of phenotype and allele frequencies show a marked heterogeneity, especially with regard to the allel GC*1F of the GC system, the alleles A2HS*1 and A2HS*2 of the A2HS system and the alleles F13B*1 and F13B*3 allele of the F13B system. Analysis of the genetic variability by means of distance and principal component analysis revealed that with regard to the seven polymorphic loci studied the population samples from Prague and Jekaterinburg are characterized by deviating genetic structures. While the different genetic structure of the sample from Prague is mainly due to the distribution of the alleles at the A2HS locus, the sample from Jekaterinburg shows differences in several loci. The genetic dissimilarity corresponds to the large geographic distance from the other populations and can presumably be explained with the comparatively heterogeneous ethnic composition of the population of this city located at the geographic borderline between Europe and Asia.

A method for simultaneous determination of group-specific component (GC) and alpha 2HS-glycoprotein (AHSG) by ultrathin-layer isoelectric focusing and immunoblotting.

A method for simultaneous determination of group-specific component and alpha 2-HS-glycoprotein by ultrathin-layer isoelectric focusing and immunoblotting is described. The advantages of this combined technique are the saving of chemicals and time. The band patterns of both marker proteins were always reproducible.

[Method of combined demonstration of Gc globulin, alpha-1-antitrypsin, erythrocyte acid phosphatase and phosphoglucomutase using isoelectric focusing in ultra-thin layer gels].

An economic and reliable method for simultaneous determination of Gc, alpha-1-antitrypsin, acid erythrocyte phosphatase, and phosphoglucomutase by means of isoelectric focussing in ultrathin-layer gels is described. Man advantages are time- and costsaving without any unreliabilities in forensic application.

[Children of parents irradiated prior to conception--a longitudinal study (results, 1986)].

The results of a longterm study on 55 children are presented whose parents were treated by radiotherapy. Five or ten years after a first examination, these children were submitted to a check-up investigation of their physical and intellectual development. The group of twenty irradiated fathers received an average dose to the gonads of 0.55 Gy (0.01 to 6.4 Gy), the group of twenty irradiated mothers 0.72 Gy (0.01 to 8.0 Gy). In all parents the most frequent finding was Hodgkin's disease, which was diagnosed as a neoplasm in 23 cases. Chemotherapy was applied in two out of 40 patients. The proof of paternity was made with a 86% accuracy for ten out of twenty fathers by determination of HLA types. A conception was demonstrated beyond all doubt after a dose to the testicles of 1.2 Gy in the irradiated fathers and after a dose to the ovaries of 3.0 Gy in the irradiated mothers. The offspring of the F1 generation showed no modification in the sex ratio. In the primary examination, a rate of 5.5% of severe malformations was found (trisomy E, bradyacousia of the inner ear, cleft hands and feet). 24% of the children had malformations which needed a treatment (hernias, torticollis, hip dysplasia). 18 out of 55 children (33%) presented abnormalities in the widest sense of the word. Three children (5.5%) were premature infants, and there is a general tendency towards shortened pregnancy (-3.6 days). Hernias (7/55) are a frequent finding. In children of both sexes, carporadiography shows a delayed development which is not compensated in the check-up examinations at five or ten years, but does not cause an underdevelopment in body height as compared to great normal collectives. The results suggest a slightly increased malformation rate among children whose parents were treated by radiotherapy. Above all the connective and supporting tissue seems involved. Some proposals are made how to give a radiogenetic advice to tumor patients who want to have children.
