Besnoitia sp. (Protozoa:Toxoplasmatinae) from Akodon montensis (Rodentia:Cricetidae) in Santa Catarina State, Brazil.

Tissue cysts of Besnoitia sp. were found in muscles and several organs from a naturally infected Akodon montensis captured in the rural area of the municipality of Timbó, Santa Catarina State, in southern Brazil. Indirect fluorescence and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays carried out with sera from mice chronically infected with Toxoplasma gondii and Besnoitia sp. showed, as expected, a stronger reaction against homologous than heterologous antigens. No cross-protection was observed in mice immunized with T. gondii when challenged with Besnoitia sp. This is the first description of a natural infection of A. montensis by parasites of the genus Besnoitia sp. in Brazil.

Morphological and morphometric study of atrial specific granules and other secretory components in dogs experimentally infected with Trypanosoma cruzi.

Changes in blood volume can induce morphometric and morphological alterations in the secretory complex of the myoendocrine cells due to the stretching of atrial walls. These alterations were studied by electron microscopy, using dogs infected intraperitonially with Trypanosoma cruzi and necropsied during the acute phase of the infection when congestive heart failure was present. Several changes were observed in the myoendocrine cells of the heart: hypertrophy and hyperplasia of rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complex, increase in telenuclear secretory complex, increase in fusion of type B atrial specific granules (ASG), decrease of the total number of ASG, enlargement of the maximum diameter of type A ASG and a relative increase in the number of type B ASG. These alterations suggest a larger secretory activity of the atrial myoendocrine cells with a larger secretion of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP).

Scorpion sting-induced pulmonary oedema: evidence of increased alveolocapillary membrane permeability.

A 16-year-old boy died with acute pulmonary oedema and shock after Tityus serrulatus scorpion sting. The patient showed evidence of cardiac dysfunction and damage, an increase in tracheobronchial aspirate/plasma protein concentration, light microscopic features of the lung compatible with the adult respiratory distress syndrome and electron microscopic findings compatible with acute lung injury and increased alveolocapillary membrane permeability.

Immunocytochemical study of tissue parasitism of dog adrenal glands in experimental Chagas' disease.

In human beings, the central vein of the adrenal glands has been considered by some authors to be one of the preferential sites of Trypanosoma cruzi settling in the chronic form of Chagas' disease. This appears to be due to the local corticoid-rich environment that may protect the parasite against the immunological defences of the host. An immunocytochemical study of the adrenal glands of 15 dogs was carried out for the detection of tissue parasitism in the acute and chronic phases of experimental T. cruzi infection. No amastigote nests or isolated amastigotes were detected in the adrenal parenchyma or adrenal central vein of the animals studied. Minimal nonspecific inflammatory changes were found in some glands of both infected and noninfected animals. The present results show that the adrenal glands of the dog are not injured and do not constitute a site of escape or reservoir of parasites in experimental Chagas' disease.

Ganglion cell number in hypertrophic colon above experimental stenosis.

In order to determine the number of ganglia and ganglion cells of the myenteric plexus in a hypertrophic segment of the gut a partial surgical obstruction was carried out in the colon of 10 adult rats. The myenteric plexus was studied in "spread" preparations in which the circular and longitudinal muscle layers were intact. With the colon distended and stretched above the surgical obstruction, the muscle layers became intensely hypertrophic and, as a consequence, the surface of the hypertrophic colon increased by 39%. The decrease in number of ganglia and ganglion cells per area in the hypertrophic colon was 37.6% and 36.4%, respectively. The increase of the surface of the hypertrophic colon was proportional to the decrease In number of ganglia and ganglion cells per area. Therefore there was no change in the absolute number of ganglia and neurons in the colon above the partial obstruction. The results of the present study do not support the view that immature cells develop into ganglion cells in the hypertrophic intestine above a surgical obstruction.

Ultrastructure and possible function of an atrial paraganglion not directly related to atrial ganglion in the albino mouse.

The ultrastructure of a paraganglion found in right atrium of albino mouse close to the superior cava vein is described. A capillary, which occupied the central part of the paraganglion, was surrounded by three chromaffin cells. Two other chromaffin cells were also present, but neither nerve fibers nor nerve endings were seen. The possible physiological role of paraganglia is discussed.

Studies on the vesicular component of the Auerbach's plexus and the substance P content of the mouse colon in the acute phase of the experimental Trypanosoma cruzi infection.

A dramatic reduction in the total number of dense vesicles in Auerbach's plexus of the mouse colon was observed during the acute phase of experimental American Trypanosomiasis (Chagas' disease). A significant decrease in substance P activity of the colon of inoculated animals was also measured. It is suggested that this decrease in substance P activity could be related to the reduction in the number of dense vesicles in Auerbach's plexus.
