Coherent control and polarization readout of individual excitonic states.

We present measurements and simulations of coherent control and readout of the polarization in individual exciton states. The readout is accomplished by transient four-wave mixing detected by heterodyne spectral interferometry. We observe Rabi oscillations in the polarization, which show half the period of the Rabi oscillations in the population. A decrease of the oscillation amplitude with pulse area is observed, which is not accompanied by a change in the dephasing time. This suggests the transfer of the excitation to other states as the origin of the Rabi-oscillation damping. Detuning of the excitation enables the control of the polarization in phase and amplitude and is in qualitative agreement with simulations for a two-level system. Additionally, simultaneous Rabi flopping of several spatially and energetically close exciton states is demonstrated.

Phase coherent photorefractivity in ZnSe single quantum wells.

We observe an efficient phase coherent photorefractive effect in ZnSe single quantum wells for ultrashort light pulses resonant to the excitonic transition. The effect is attributed to the formation of an electron grating in the quantum well induced by the interference of coherent excitons that preserve phase and polarization of the incident light fields. All characteristic features of the diffracted signal are explained and reproduced by numerical calculations that are based on the optical Bloch equations for a three-level system.

Exciton dephasing in quantum dot molecules.

We have measured the exciton dephasing time in InAs/GaAs quantum dot molecules having different interdot barrier thicknesses in the temperature range from 5 to 60 K, using a highly sensitive four-wave mixing heterodyne technique. At 5 K dephasing times of several hundred picoseconds are found. Moreover, a systematic dependence of the dephasing dynamics on the barrier thickness is observed. These results show how the quantum-mechanical coupling of the electronic wave functions in the molecules affects both the exciton radiative lifetime and the exciton-acoustic phonon interaction.

Relaxation and dephasing of multiexcitons in semiconductor quantum dots.

We measure the dephasing time of ground-state excitonic transitions in InGaAs quantum dots under electrical injection in the temperature range from 10 to 70 K. Electrical injection into the barrier region results in a pure dephasing of the excitonic transitions. Once the injected carriers fill the electronic ground state, the biexciton to exciton transition is probed and a correlation of the exciton and biexciton phonon scattering mechanisms is found. Additional filling of the excited states creates multiexcitons that show a fast dephasing due to population relaxation.

Enhanced resonant backscattering of excitons in disordered quantum wells.

A clear signature of enhanced backscattering of excitons is observed in the directional resonant Rayleigh scattering of light from localized two-dimensional excitons in disordered quantum wells. Its spectral dependence and time dynamics are measured and theoretically predicted in a quantitative way. The intensity enhancement has a large momentum span extending beyond the external light emission cone. This is a consequence of the small localization length of the exciton as a massive particle probed close to the band bottom. The localization length can be controlled by the photon kinetic energy. This constitutes a qualitative difference to backscattering phenomena in other branches of physics.

Ultralong dephasing time in InGaAs quantum dots.

We measure a dephasing time of several hundred picoseconds at low temperature in the ground-state transition of strongly confined InGaAs quantum dots, using a highly sensitive four-wave mixing technique. Between 7 and 100 K the polarization decay has two distinct components resulting in a non-Lorentzian line shape with a lifetime-limited zero-phonon line and a broadband from elastic exciton-acoustic phonon interactions.

Stimulated secondary emission from semiconductor microcavities.

We find strong influence of final-state stimulation on the time-resolved light emission dynamics from semiconductor microcavities after pulsed excitation allowing angle-resonant polariton-polariton scattering on the lower-polariton branch. The polariton dynamics can be controlled by injection of final-state polaritons at densities below a polariton saturation density of 5x10(8) cm(-2). A bosonic enhancement factor in the dynamics of up to 700 is evaluated.

Resonant Rayleigh scattering of exciton-polaritons in multiple quantum wells.

A theoretical concept of resonant Rayleigh scattering (RRS) of exciton-polaritons in multiple quantum wells (QWs) is presented. The optical coupling between excitons in different QWs can strongly affect the RRS dynamics, giving rise to characteristic temporal oscillations on a picosecond scale. Bragg and anti-Bragg arranged QW structures with the same excitonic parameters are predicted to have drastically different RRS spectra. Experimental data on the RRS from multiple QWs show the predicted strong temporal oscillations at small scattering angles, which are well explained by the presented theory.

[Effect of ionizing energy on the bladder dilated by dura, with special reference to the implantation technic. Animal experimental study].

On 60 female rabbits we examined the influence of the postoperative irradiation on the urinary bladder dilated by liophilized human dura after resection of the wall. Compared with former examinations as to the implantation technique the submucous deposition of the dura and fixation with single-button U-sutures (chromic catgut 000) has proved as superior. Vascular trophic disturbances on the margins of the resection could not be proved. When 4,500 R, 6,000 R and 7,500 R were irradiated the regeneration process through the dura serving as "live" rail retarded considerably. Problems in connection with the suture technique and the total focal dosage are discussed taking into consideration literature.
