Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in Thailand: the influence on the clinical presentation of malaria in male adult patients.

One hundred and ninety-two male malaria patients admitted to two different hospitals within 1 year, were studied. There were 74 malaria cases with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency and 118 G-6-PD normal malaria cases, randomly selected as a control group. History of dark urine, and the presence of jaundice, haematocrit, total bilirubin and parasite count on day of admission were not significantly different comparing both groups. The number of observed complications did not differ either. Distinctions were detected in abnormal symptoms and in some laboratory parameters in patients with Plasmodium falciparum infection. G-6-PD deficient patients had significantly less gastrointestinal disturbances (P = 0.006), higher serum glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (P = 0.009) and significantly lower blood urea nitrogen (P = 0.007) when compared with the control group. These findings indicate that G-6-PD deficiency when the variants are aggregated, in male adult patients has no significant influence on the clinical presentation of malaria.

[Visual evoked potentials in 8-year-old children. Normal values and applications in pediatric neurology].

In the framework of a research program on the prevalence and incidence of cerebral dysfunction and child psychiatric disorder, EEG and flash-evoked responses were recorded in more than 300 8-year-old children. Automatic determination of the following parameters: latencies and amplitudes of N1, P2, N2, N3, N4; area of the complex N1P2N2, average absolute amplitude, asymmetry coefficients and Pearson correlation between the responses of both hemispheres. Normative data for these parameters obtained from a randomized sample (N = 148), mean values and intersextile ranges are reported. The random sample was compared with two other groups of children (8 years old): children with minimal brain dysfunction (N = 55) and/or psychiatric disorder (N = 82). Both groups showed significantly longer latencies in comparison to the random normative sample.

The new patient in San Francisco.

This paper describes an increasingly prevalent type of patient seen in San Francisco, a city which is often regarded as a social trend-setter. Such patients are characterized by social and material success, diffusion or reversal of traditional sex roles, acceptance of any sexual behaviour and instability of all relationships. The resultant insecurity leads to heavy reliance on self-help books and pseudo-therapies, often with disastrous results. Conventional therapeutic methods seem inapplicable, the task being apparently more one of education than therapy.

An alternative method of three-dimensional reconstruction from two-dimensional CT and MR data sets.

Cross-sectional images for medical diagnosis and therapy are obtained by sonography, CT or MRI. We propose an alternative solution to the problem of constructing a set of cross-sectional contours from two-dimensional (2D) CT or MR data sets. The method reduces the problem of constructing a shape over the cross-sections to one of constructing a sequence of partial shapes, each of them connecting two cross-sections lying on adjacent planes. The solution makes use of a spatial mathematical formalism (Delaunay triangulation). MR investigations were carried out on different objects (hips, livers) to illustrate the two-dimensional MR data sets by the reconstruction method. The resulting images represent the original image data in a way that is more suitable for observation of 3D relationships than the conventional cross-sectional viewing model.
