Sebaceous gland metaplasia in cardiac-type mucosa of the oesophago-gastric junction.

The first case of sebaceous gland metaplasia arising in cardiac-type mucosa of the oesophago-gastric junction of 71-year-old man is reported. Within cardiac glands, small nests composed of clear cells closely resembling sebaceous glands of the skin were found. Immunohistochemically, the cell nests stained positively for a monoclonal antibody 115D8 against milk-fat globule membrane (MAM-6). These cells were sometimes covered by cylindrical cells positive for foveolar-type mucin of the stomach (MI), and basal marginal cells of these nests expressed high molecular weight cytokeratins (34BE12). This study documents a new type of metaplasia of the gastric mucosa.

Transition of rat pancreatic juice edema into acute pancreatitis by single ethanol administration.

The present study was done to determine the influence of single oral, intravenous and intraperitoneal ethanol administration at pre-existing pancreatic juice edema on frequency and severity of acute pancreatitis (AP). The rats were divided into six control (isolated treatment) and five study groups (edema plus varied ethanol application). 24 h postoperatively quality and quantity of macroscopic and histopathologic changes were graded on an arbitrary scale. While in the controls AP was not induced in any rat, in the study groups extrapancreatic fat necrosis and histologic lesions of the pancreas were found in the majority of animals. The individual rats revealed a remarkable variation of the severity of changes. A detailed differentiation of pancreatic necroses revealed a dominance of intrapancreatic fat necrosis and acinar necrosis at the periphery of lobules. The findings observed were widely independent of the way of ethanol administration. The present approach offers a simple and reproducible animal model to study the influence of acute ethanol application on development of AP and hints on the involvement of disturbances of the pancreatic microcirculation and of acinar cell metabolism in the pathogenesis of ethanol-induced acute pancreatitis.

[Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the lung].

The case of a 35-year-old woman with malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the right lung is reported. In spite of the considerable size of the tumour, no metastases have been found in the autopsy. The dominant type was a fibroblastlike cell. Owing to its infiltration of the spinal column, the tumour had paralyzed the lower part of body. Moreover, hypoglycemia was terminally observed. On the basis of these findings and reports in the literature we discuss the clinical and morphological problems, the therapy and prognosis of malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the lung. Besides the possible connection of tumour to hypoglycemia (Doege-Potter-Syndrome) is also discussed.

[Primary sarcoma of the spleen].

Four cases of sarcoma of the spleen, two fibrosarcomas and two malignant haemangioendotheliomas (mHE), are described. They correspond to an frequency of 0.08% of the post-mortem material. Malignant non-Hodgkin lymphomas of the spleen have not been considered. There are distinct differences between fibrosarcomas and mHE with respect to macroscopic appearance, behavior and formation of metastases. Differential diagnostic problems in the histologic assessment of mHE are discussed.

[Cancer of the pancreas: a critical analysis of 214 autopsy records].

Based on the post-mortem findings of 214 cases of pancreatic carcinoma, local complications, distant effects of the tumour and paraneoplastic syndromes are considered in detail. With regard to the complications there are distinct differences between carcinomas of the pancreatic head and tail. The most important local complications turned out to be stenosis of the common bile duct in 58% and alterations of the gastrointestinal tract in 30%.

[Animal experiments on predilection of the superficial femoral artery of the adductor canal for arteriosclerosis].

The premature manifestation of the arteriosclerosis in the adductor canal makes this vascular region to a first-class site of predilection. These localised mechanical morphological factors were malingered by means of polyvinylchloride splinting in animal experiment. All degrees of severity of the arteriosclerotic vascular wall changes were shown histologically. The changes of the arteries were developed essentially slighter under medication of pyridinolcarbamat, however, they could not be prevented.

[Enzymatic chemoarchitecture of the isocortex of humans (area 10 of Brodmann)].

The distributions of some oxidoreductases, esterases and phosphatases were investigated in the area 10 (lobus frontalis cerebri) of old human brains by means of histoenzymatic methods. It was possible to observe a different spread of enzymatic activites of hydrolases and oxidoreductases in the several layers of human frontal cortex. The microphotometrical gradation of oxidoreductases was identical with the results of the most mammal brains with the exception of the alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase. The enzyme products of this oxidoreductase show a increase in the lamina 6 and in the subcortex. The cause of the culmination is not jet clear.

[Bony changes in chronic odontogenic maxillary sinusitis].

The authors undertook histological studies on the bone of the facial wall of the maxillary sinus from 64 out of 84 patients who had been operated on for chronic maxillary sinusitis of dental origin in the course of 16 months. Apart from mucosal changes, the specimens from 16 patients showed also osseous changes in the form of periosteal reactions of varying extent. With regard to therapy, it is concluded that patients suffering from odontogenic sinusitis should for preference be treated by surgical intervention, because the conservative treatment will not necessarily result in complete healing.

[Development of the disease and autopsy findings in a case of malignant hemangioendothelioma of the right main bronchus (author's transl)].

The case of a 47-years-old woman with malignant hemangioendothelioma growing from the wall of the right main bronchus is reported. Due to its endobronchial growth, the tumor had led to early obliteration of the bronchus with atelectasis of the right lung, perforated the bronchial wall and had grown up in the mediastinum to the size of 8,5 X 7 X 5 cm bounded by a wall of fibrous tissue. The development of the disease had required about 3 month only on the whole. Exstirpation of the tumour had not been advisable owing to its unfavourable location. In spite of the considerable size of the tumour, no metastases have been founded in the autopsy.

An experimental model for inducing fetal hypotrophy in the rabbit.

Intravenous injection of a saponin-collargol solution into pregnant rabbits induced, in addition to haemolysis and decrease in body weight of the gravid animals, a dose-dependent intrauterine deficient development of the fetuses accompanied by pronounced general reduction in body weight and disproportionate growth of fetal organs. Brain, heart, lungs, and the kidneys to a lesser degree, were found to be comparatively heavier when compared to the total body weight. The reasons discussed are hypoxia-dependent deficiency in glycogen and glucose, nutritional factors resulting from malnutrition, intoxication, and placental insufficiency due to infarctions, particularly for groups II and III.

Determination of the glycogen contents in the brains of perinatal and newborn rabbits under conditions of experimental hypoxia.

The glycogen contents of 121 rabbit brains having different levels of hypoxia were determined, calculation being in mg% of glucose per g of brain. It was possible to observe significant reductions in carbohydrate content under conditions of acute and chronic hypoxia. Moderate prepartum accumulation of glycogen in untreated rabbit brains is likely. Chronic reduction in reserve fuel resulted in deficient development of the brain, as is clearly shown by brain weight determinations. This enables a parallel between this condition and intrauterine dystrophia.
