Crisis intervention in children and adolescents.

Emergency mental status examinations for children are usually sought in crisis situations. Children and adolescents with conduct disorders, suicidal behavior, psychosis, school refusal and special problems such as physical or sexual abuse may present to the family physician in crisis. The goal of the emergency mental status examination must be to develop an appropriate intervention.

Myxedema psychosis--insanity defense in homicide.

In the course of a hypothyroid psychosis, a young man committed murder. He was later judged to be not guilty by reason of insanity, although he was clearly sane at the time of his trial. Diagnostic, treatment and longer range management problems are discussed.

The early manifestations of adolescent thought disorder.

Clinicians who wait for disturbed adolescents to fulfil the diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia or a toxic psychosis will delay diagnosing a developing thought disorder until the youngster has been taught to be crazy and has become chronically stunted psychologically. Earlier diagnosis can allow more prompt prevention and support and can facilitate treatment and minimize handicapping. No single symptom is diagnostic of a developing thought disorder but thought disruption can be suspected when a cluster of persistent symptoms is present. These early manifestations of teenage thought disorder are presented and discussed.
