Often there is a need to address the status of the nasal septum during functional endonasal sinus surgery. The outcome of a sinus procedure can be enhanced if the surgeon has better exposure of the operative area or if the patient receives a larger nasal airway, which provides laminar air flow. We present a technique of managing septal deviations and obstructions that adds little additional time to the sinus procedure and allows direct evaluation of the septum with the endoscopes. We describe this relatively simple technique, indications for its use, and results of the first 38 cases.
L-[3H]Proline binds specifically and saturably to rat hippocampal synaptic membranes in the absence of inorganic ions. Saturation isotherms constructed in Hepes-Tris buffer best fit a model of a single independent population of binding sites with a dissociation constant of 1.6 microM and maximum density of 16 pmol/mg protein. The rank order of displacement of radioligand by proline analogues suggests that binding sites of this type could be receptors responsible for proline-induced retinal spreading depression and inhibition of memory consolidation.
A theoretical model of lesion remineralization predicts that in vivo caries repair can be effected in a five-day period by means of a controlled- and sustained-release device containing calcium, phosphate, and fluoride. The calculations detail an 80% repair before the remineralization process stops. However, the fluoridated hydroxyapatite formed is calculated to be about 20% more resistant to future attack than is hydroxyapatite, making effective repair complete. Optimal flux (W) conditions for repair of 100 microns lesions are WCa = 1.0 X 10(-6) kg/m2s, stoichiometric phosphate, and WF = 2.0 X 10(-9) kg/m2s.
