[Difficulties in the aspiration cytodiagnosis of the neck tumors].

Since 1971 FNA is used at the ENT Department Medical Academy in Warsaw in the diagnosis of the neck and head tumors. This method was effective in 87.4% of cases. Among 382 biopsies of the neck tumors performed in 1980-1990, in which FNA results were compared with histopathology, in 12.6% of cases the false diagnosis was found. There were malignant primary tumors, cervical lymph nodes metastases, nonmalignant neck neoplasms, neck cysts and inflammations. The retrospective investigations of the smears allowed us to find out whether the false diagnosis depends on inappropriate interpretation of the smears or the diagnosis is really impossible to establish. The retrospective studies are very helpful for the better understanding of the malignant criteria and for the improvement of the results of the cytodiagnosis in the head and neck tumors.

[The significance of the cytological evaluation in the early diagnosis of the laryngeal carcinoma].

The aim of the study was to find out how useful is the cytological examination in the detection of the laryngeal carcinoma. 70 cytological smears from the larynx were taken in the group of 35 patients with carcinoma of the larynx treated at the ENT Clinic. In 91% for the cases the agreement between cytological and histopatological results was found. In 9% the cytological examinations were false negative.

[Nasal cytology in patients with non-seasonal atopic rhinitis].

The results of the cytological evaluation of the nasal smears taken from the patients with non-seasonal atopic rhinitis were presented. In 95% of smears a very abundant cytological material of the columnar epithelium cells was found. The smears taken by cyto-brushing (Medscand) showed the presence of the cytological material from the whole nasal mucosa, while those taken by the loop contained the cells from the small area of the mucosa.

[Cytological evaluation of nasal mucosal variability in surgically treated patients with ozena].

The cytologic examination of nasal mucosa before and after the operation of ozaena were described. Significant changing of cytological images was found. In preoperative examinations the squamous metaplasia was seen, the postoperative examinations the squamous metaplasia was seen, the postoperative findings were various. From the prognostic point of view most positive was the recovery of the cylindric epithelium. The worst in the prognosis was the persisting of squamous metaplasia in all postoperative smears.

[Use of Solcoseryl DAP after nasal septum surgery].

Solcoseryl is a biological agent, which accelerates the healing tissue procedure. This influence was studied during the nasal septum surgery. In 25 patients the postoperational nasal plug was inserted with the Solcoseryl and in 10 (control) with the paraffin. The cytologic verifications were performed before and after the surgery. In the solcoseryl group the mucosa regeneration procedure was accelerated and the inflammation reduced.
