[Experimental comparative studies of the reactibility of lung tissue to intratracheally introduced ash produced by power plants].

There was analysed the behaviour of the pulmonary tissue in white Wistar female rats exposed to a single effect of electroenergetic ashes from a few Polish power stations, hasting plants and electrohasting plants. The animals received a single 0.6 ml dose of the ashes in suspension of physiologic fluid intratracheally; 3 and 6 months after the experiment, the animals were decapitated and material for examinations was collected. Grains of used ashes were then assessed under the scanning electron microscope. Segments were stained with hematoxyline and cosine and by Masson's method. All the ashes caused inflammatory infiltrations, granulomas containing grains of the examined ash, fibrosis, thickening of interalveolar septa, atelectasis, and emphysema. The experiment resulted in a disturbance of biological balance of pulmonary connective tissue (stroma) due to the action of the ashes.

[Hydroxyproline in the rat lung following exposure to industrial ashes and surface dusts].

Experimental animals (female white rats of Wistar strain) were given intratracheally a suspension of soil dusts and electroenergetic ashes. 3 months later, hydroxyproline contents in lung tissue was determined with PROKOP'S and UNDENFRIEND'S method modified by TOMASZEWSKI and HANZLIK. The highest hydroxyproline levels were found in animals from experimental groups, which had been administered electroenergetic ashes.

[Morphological evaluation of the lungs of rats exposed to soil dust].

By histological (survey staining with hematoxylin and eosin) and analytical (determination of trace elements content) techniques, morphological evaluation of the lungs of rats affected by soil dust has been carried out. Experimental animals have been given intratracheally, with a blunt aspirating needle, a suspension of 50 mg of the test sample of soil dust in 0.6 ml of 0.9% NaCl solution. The material for studies, in form of small segments of lungs, has been collected 3 and 9 months after dusts application. The findings point to possible pathogenetic effects of soil dusts, which is related to their physico-chemical properties.

[Frequency and intensity of behavioral and psychological symptoms in the course of Alzheimer's disease].

The aim of the study was: 1) to estimate the occurrence and intensity of some psychopathological symptoms in the course of Alzheimer's disease, and 2) to examine whether the occurrence of behavioral and psychological symptoms increases with the deepening of dementia process among persons with Alzheimer's disease living in their homes with outpatient treatment. The study was conducted among 94 persons (38 men and 56 women ageing from 52 to 86 years (x = 72.4 +/- 6.9), with education: from 2 to 17 years (x = 11.2 +/- 3.7). Three subgroups were selected for study with regard to the intensity of dementia process, estimated according to Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR): very mild (n = 16, x = 71.4 +/- 6.7), mild (n = 43, x = 72.6 +/- 7.9), moderate (n = 35, x = 72.5 +/- 6.9). Subjects in group II and III fulfill diagnostic criteria of dementia according to ICD-10, DSM IV and criteria of probable AD according to NINCDS-ADRDA. In the estimation of occurrence of behavioral and psychological disturbances: Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale--non-cognitive behavior (ADAS-non-cog) and subscale "Change in Personality, Interests, Drive" of Blessed Dementia Scale were used. The results have shown that with the progress of dementia process, the occurrence of the following psychopathological symptoms such as: hallucinations, intensive motor activity, purposeless hyperactivity, pacing, rigidity increases and there is a relinquishment of hobbies. In addition, regardless of the stage of dementia, such behaviors as: apathy, depression, tearfullness, impaired emotional control and disturbances of appetite were observed relatively frequently.
