Linkage disequilibrium between RFLP haplotype 2 and the affected PAH allele in PKU families from the Berlin area of the German Democratic Republic.

Probands from 26 PKU-affected families of the Berlin area were analyzed with respect to the allele frequency distribution of six RFLPs in linkage with the normal and the PKU alleles of the phenylalanine hydroxylase gene. These investigations confirm most of the RFLP haplotypes observed by Güttler and colleagues in the Danish population and describe two additional ones. They detect no significant differences in the single RFLP or RFLP haplotype distribution on the normal chromosomes in comparison with the Danish families and confirm a prevalent association of the RFLP haplotypes 1, 4, and 7 with the normal PAH allele. In contrast to the Danish investigations, in our study the PKU allele is found most frequently linked to haplotype 2, rather then to haplotype 3. In one of our patients we found a substitution of the normal 19-kb MspI fragment by a 13.5- and a 5.5-kb fragment, reported up to now only in one other German family.

Adaptation games between microorganisms sharing a common substrate niche.

Microorganisms adapt their enzymic outfit to the ambient substrate supply. If several species compete for a limiting substrate, then reciprocal influence on the state of adaptation results, which has been envisaged in the paper as strategic game. The most important types of strategies, which are assessed by the governing selection rule, are called aggressive, neutral and cooperative. A cooperative strategy brings the highest advantage, but triggers the temptation to increase the gain by defection. The neutral strategy, i.e. acting as if the competitor were alone in the medium, is promising only when the selection rule favours product maximization, whereas as aggressive strategy, e.g. maximizing the difference between own and foreign profit, is most effective on growth rate maximization as selection criterion. Gruelling competition reduces the metabolic output and weakens the community as a whole against other systems.

Results of computer-aided diagnosis of peripheral bronchial carcinoma.

Radiographic images can be converted into numerical sequences that can be evalueate by computer to determine the significance of certain radiographic findings in peripheral pulmonary nodules. Of three methods (discriminant analysis. Bayes' theoroem, and the Calm system), discriminant analysis has proven the best with an accuracy rate of 85%. By taking into account serial radiographs and statements on the possible growth of the neoplasm, the accuracy of the method can be increased to 90%. A simplified, inexpensive and effective method for application of this diagnostic tool is described.

[Effect of rapid changes of the oxygenation state and other external parameters on the long-term behavior of the energy metabolism in the erythrocyte].

The red blood cell when transported through the circulatory system is exposed to a steady (approximately periodical) change of environmental conditions causing a permanent fluctuation of its important metabolic parameters. In a simple theoretical model it is demonstrated that a rapid oscillation of such parameters may stabilize a metabolic state which will collapse when this oscillation breaks off. The hypothesis is advanced that parameter oscillations caused by the physiological function of the red blood cell may be of importance for the maintenance of its energy metabolism and that the break-off of these oscillations may be a potential cause for the metabolic collapse, e.g. in stored blood.
