Tumor clearance pattern was studied for Stage IB carcinoma of the cervix using 252Cf neutron brachytherapy followed by fractionated radiotherapy as compared to conventional therapy using fractionated radiotherapy followed by 137Cs photon low-dose rate (LDR) implant therapy. Reduction in bulk of tumor was assessed by regular and frequent serial clinical observations. The tumor clearance pattern of the neutron-treated patients was greatly accelerated and radically different from those treated using conventional radiation.
Spontaneous radiation-induced or radiation leukemia virus (RadLV)-induced leukemias were treated in vivo in an early-to-advanced lymphomatous state by using 1,3-bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosouea (BCNU). BCNU was given at various times after the tumor induction procedure. Treatment was based upon the findings that the RadLV-derived transplant lymphosarcoma (LSA) tumor was cured with a frequency of greater than 90% and a tumor-resistant state was produced by tumor cure. Death from RadLV lymphomas which had been initiated in newborn C57BL mice by ip injection of RadLV was scored in untreated or BCNU-treated mice. At 150 days after initiation, control mice had developed extensive thymic lymphomas, whereas BCNU-treated mice had developed less extensive tumors, had a reduced incidence by approximately 50% and had an increased survival time. Similar findings were noted for the radiation (190 rad of cobalt-60 gamma rays weekly X 4)-induced thymic lymphoma-bearing C57BL mice. Injection of 10(6) living LSA cells before BCNU treatment greatly decreased the tumor load for all groups treated but also shortened the mean survival time. Challenge of long-term survivors with small numbers of viable LSA tumor cells did not identify any host resistance of the survivors to the transplant LSA tumor and indicated that the induction procedure, whether RadLV or radiation, was strongly immunosuppressive.

The response of bulky, advanced Stage 1B and early Stage II carcinoma of the cervix to neutron brachytherapy (NT and radiotherapy) was studied using combined NT radiation and extrafascial hysterectomy with histologic evaluation. Scheduling of neutron therapy relative to external beam photon therapy, tumor volume, tumor stage, tumor histology, and clinical tumor clearance were assessed in these studied. NT was easily combined with surgery in this study. Low stage tumors, small tumor volume and "early" neutron implants (scheduled within +/- one week of the start of fractionated radiation) showed more frequent histologic clearance of tumor. Long-term tumor control has been achieved and failures developed distance metastases without pelvic or local recurrence. This experience indicates that NT was effective for tumor clearance and control and represents and promising new modality for localized, advanced tumor therapy.

Concentration of factor VIII from fresh plasma by cryoprecipitation remains the basis for preparation of products used to treat haemophilia A. This paper describes the preparation of a factor VIII concentrate from small plasma pools in transfusion centres with drying facilities. The dried concentrate from one litre of plasma dissolves very well in 50 or 100 ml of distilled water and contains around 500 IU per bottle. The specific activity per mg protein is 0.19 IU and the fibrinogen concentration is half that in frozen cryoprecipitate. This method of drying causes no appreciable loss in the factor VIIIC activity and little denaturation as shown by the factor-VIII-related antigen/factor VIIIC ratio of 1.7.
Three young unrelated dogs were diagnosed as having the canine counterpart of Ebstein's anomaly, an eponymic term for a cardiac malformation in man. All of the dogs had systolic murmurs in the tricuspid area, and all had radiographic evidence of cardiac enlargement, particularly of the right atrium. Electrocardiography indicated atrial disease or right atrial enlargement and right ventricular conduction defects. The defect was confirmed by means of cardiac catheterization in all 3 dogs. Open heart surgery was performed on 2 of the dogs--plastic reconstruction of the tricuspid annulus and placement of a prosthetic valve in 1 and closure of an atrial septal defect in the other; both of these dogs died (1 day and 1 month after surgery).
A system of identification and inventory control of donations and aliquots of human blood stored in liquid nitrogen is described. It is simple and easy to operate. Up to five adequate samples can be obtained from each donation at discrete intervals without the need to recover the main donation or, as is so often the case, the only single aliquot available.
