[Psychological and neurological sequelae of alcoholism].

Among the sequelae of alcoholism in psychiatrics alcoholic delirium and suicides have pre-eminence. Nearly 15 per cent of all alcoholics develop an alcoholic delirium. The death-rate could be reduced on about 1 per cent by chlormethiazole. Suicide is the second frequent cause of death of the alcoholics. Very often tremor is observed on alcoholics among the neurological complications. It can appear further sequelae, especially the Wernicke-Korsakoff-syndrome, polyneuropathy, epilepsy in alcoholics, cerebral atrophy, and cerebellar atrophy.

[Alcoholism. Classification, epidemiology, etiology].

There are 5 different types of alcoholics and 4 phases of process of alcoholism. In the Federal Republic of Germany 1,2--1,5 million people are alcoholics, among them about 30 per cent women and 10 per cent adolescents not older than 25 years. Three factors: alcohol, individuum, and environment play a part in the development of alcoholism.

[Trichinosis].

In spite of a decreased occurrence of trichinella spiralis with pigs and wild boars in the Federal Republic of Germany raw or underdone pork is the primary source of infection for man. But as the epidemic of Ebermannstadt has shown, trichinelliasis occasionally occurs nowadays. Besides, there is a danger of infection when travelling to countries with insufficient meat hygiene. After initial enteritis the characteristic symptomatology appears: facial edemas, myalgia, fever, and hypereosinophilia. Recently trichinelliasis has often taken subclinical course. The diagnosis is made by demonstration of the infectious agent and above all by methods of immunodiagnosis. Among preventive measures the microscopic/trichinoscopic examination or the artificial digestion method -- according to law -- take the first place. The acute disease is treated with Tiabendazol.
